The Garden Thread - September, 2025
September 1, 2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 09/01/2025 4:39:33 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

I forgot about smoking whole chicken!

Beer can chicken is the best.

I tossed a couple family packs of legs and thighs on the Traeger last night. It went nicely with fresh tomatoes and cukes for supper.

Apple butter is reducing in the slow cooker. It should be cooked down enough to put in jars and process by this evening, but Mrs. Augie and I have a date tonight at the drive-in theater with granddaughter so the canning will have to wait until the weekend.

Think I'm going to cancel the fishing trip on Sunday. There's just too much stuff that I need to get done here.

Ugh...

He’s super creative. His gardens and home are spectacular. I can’t remember if he’s an Architect or an Artist by trade, but he sure has many talents.

He needs to lose the beard, though. ;)

We used to make ‘Beer Butt Chicken’ quite often. Not sure why we stopped? Probably the invention of the Costco Roast Chicken for five bucks!

Another trick is to mount the chicken on a Bundt Pan filled with potatoes, onions, carrots - whatever ‘sturdy’ veggies you like and bake.

Found a jar of Kale Pesto from 2023 in the freezer. Making Pesto-Marinated chicken breasts for supper.

Pesto, oil, lemon juice - make a loose paste and coat the chicken breasts. Let marinade overnight or for a few hours before dinner. Grill or use your cast iron pan in the oven to cook. 400 degrees, 6 minutes a side, depending upon thickness. 165 degrees inside with a meat thermometer.

But that still leaves me with more pesto to use up, so I found this:

Loving so many of these recipes!

Here is the 'Harvard Square' tomato in all of her glory! I got 6 this size and another 6 that were smaller. This one was a good 6" across! The plant still has some tomatoes on it - doing a thorough 'garden gleaning' in the near future. It's red and yellow on the inside. Flavor was mild but it's low-acid being a yellow.

We're going to Bear Camp! So excited! Fremont, Sioux and Arikara. ('Ah-RICK-Ah-Rah') Plott Hounds, all hand-raised by me.

Meant to post this earlier, but since I didn't, here it is now - the first bur on one of my chestnut trees.

Diana; Harvard Square; Nice looking and without a lot of wrinkling or bug damage! Similar look to Pineapple tomatoes.

I will keep it in mind for the future. I am trying to use up the seeds I have before I buy more so it might be a while. I have a lot of seeds in my seed box!

At this point I have a number of green tomatoes hanging at the tops of my withering tomato plants. I give them about 2 more weeks and after that will start dig the Korean Gold sweet potatoes, take in the remaining tomatoes and peppers, and disassemble the garden. After that I will plant the garlic and Top setting onions and move the Multiplier green onions. I would like put herbs next to the (new) patio so I can pick them without going into the garden.

It is with fondest memories that I remember being invited over for one of my first sleepovers (in my new town) with my still best childhood friend (5th grade). She had an older sister in 9th grade (!!!) who made dinner for us that night, which was, you guessed it, porcupine meatballs! (Both of the parents were Ph.D’s, so all of their 7 kids had chores on a chalkboard. I loved that chalkboard schedule!). Somewhere I still have that typed recipe from her mom once I asked for it. Thanks to Liz, I don’t have to look for it all these zillion years later. It looks fairly similar to the one I remember, but haven’t made in many years. ❤️

I have never seen real chestnut trees that I know of, or the burs. That’s cool!

Every time I see the word “trout” mentioned, my brain immediately goes to the first time I ever had rainbow trout, which my dad and brothers caught for us for dinner, when we tent-camped somewhere in the Tetons and very near the banks of the Snake River. I was only 12 or so. One of my very favorite memories, and one of my favorite fresh fish. (Freshly caught fish -not farmed- is superior to any other way. Doesn’t matter how you cook it.)

Well, that beats me! I think I have had trout perhaps 3 times and all were either store bought or farm raised. Maybe someday.
