India has adopted the Soviet economic model since 1947 independence. It significantly imports from China and Russia while primarily exporting to the U.S. and EU while keeping most of its domestic market restricted. There is a significant trade imbalance. President Trump is correct to insist on tariffs to normalize the out of balance relationship.

Cue Neil Sedaka:

"Ooh, I hear laughter in the rain
Walking hand in hand with the one I love.

Ooh, how I love the rainy days
And the happy way I feel inside." -

Doesn't it just give you the 'warm and fuzzies'?

My understanding, from previous Free Republic posts...

Asian Indian oligarchs are purchasing embargoed Russian oil or refined products, then re-selling on the world markets.

The Indian oligarchs then split the profit with the Russian government and Russian oligarchs.

The Indian oligarchs then pay personal or corporate income tax to the Indian government.

Well paid work, if you can find it.

Putin sells oil to Modi. Modi resells it at a profit to the Europeans. Both men laugh.

“India has adopted the Soviet economic model since 1947 independence. It significantly imports from China and Russia while primarily exporting to the U.S. and EU while keeping most of its domestic market restricted. There is a significant trade imbalance. President”

I listened to historian Sara Pain on how badly mismanaged American and Indian foreign policy was handled. To call American leaders naïve about Pakistan would be a massive understatement. Among other things, Ameria thought it could arm Pakistan in return for helping against the Soviets and everything would be just fine regarding their interaction with the Indians. Then along came LBJ’s awful interactions with the Indians because he wanted them to support America in Vietnam. He REALLY poisoned any potential good relationship.

If India was to become an expanding local hegemon like China, I think we’d have the same problem with India we currently have with China. But due to India’s internal politics I don’t see that happening this century.

“Watch for Trump in the not to distant future sign an EO limiting H1B visas.”

I’m Pro Trump because the alternative was insufferable Democratic overreach in Trans, abortion, hate crimes, etc. However, Trump isn’t going to do anything that will result in pushback from any organization currently onboard with him. He’s embracing marihuana. He has refused to get rid of the alcohol fuel fiasco. This is real politics. You have to take the bad with the good and hope the good outweighs the bad. So far, I’m as happy as is possible given the circumstances. But we’re stuck with alcohol in fuel and more and more stoned less than optimal people. (I expect to hear from the angry “I use pot and I’m fine” crowd. Maybe you are, but the bulk of people are self-medicating to their detriment. I’m sick of smelling pot in every parking lot and gas station.)

Are Russians also plagued with telemarketing scammers, poor customer service, and nasty ass attitudes at donut shops, gas stations, and convenience stores? Not to mention doctor offices.

Why India’s Democracy Is Dying

India exemplifies the global democratic recession. India’s recent downgrade to a hybrid regime is a major influence on the world’s autocratization. And the modality of India’s democratic decline reveals how democracies die today: not through a dramatic coup or midnight arrests of opposition leaders, but instead, it moves through the fully legal harassment of the opposition, intimidation of media, and centralization of executive power. By equating government criticism with disloyalty to the nation, the government of Narendra Modi is diminishing the very idea that opposition is legitimate. India today is no longer the world’s largest democracy.
