A Tuscumbia father wants to know what happened to his 15-year-old son and said he’s quickly losing trust in his community’s school system and police department as he waits for answers.

Jason Borden said he’s heard conflicting reports about what led to his son August Borden’s brain injuries that required him to be air lifted from Deshler High School to UAB Hospital on Aug. 19.

The freshman football player was walking to football practice after school when he suffered major head trauma. Once at the hospital ICU, the teen was treated for a fractured skull, two broken orbital sockets and more.

I think this is a key takeaway from the story: “Tuscumbia Police Chief Tony Logan will likely bring in Colbert County deputies to investigate the incident to eliminate any conflicts of interest.”

It’s pretty obvious that the perp is from a family that’s untoubchable. Maybe a cop’s kid, or a powerful local figure.

Does seem like a big cover-up going on. Doesn’t sound like it’s interfered with their football season.

So, the cop was:

1. Incompetent,
2. Lied to,
3. Complicit

I’d lay it out for the chief in a ‘private meeting’...considering the article conveys that there was little to no interest in pursuing the matter until the father filed his complaint.

Looking at the town, it’s small enough that it could just be a star football player. Not sure how the sheriff’s office is more likely to have an honest investigation than the police department.

It’s time for ALEA and the state of Alabama to investigate the severe injuries of August Borden, a high school freshman football player, at Deshler High School in Tuscumbia. It’s been a week and the parents still have no answers.

An altercation took place on the walk to football practice, but the parents were told their son “fell down the stairs.” August suffered brain injuries, multiple skull fractures and facial fractures.

The parents say the school lied to them, repeatedly, and investigators are not doing anything to determine what happened to August. Rumors are that a player, whose father is on the school board, is the perpetrator and is being protected.

Clearly, local law enforcement is not up to the task. The state must intervene to investigate and get justice for August Borden. Whomever injured August is walking free and poses an immediate threat to everyone else at the school. It’s unacceptable that the altercation happened in front of numerous witnesses, but somehow, nobody knows anything.

This is a coverup and it can’t continue.

The August Borden injury story goes from bad to worse. August allegedly called out an 18yo senior football player for having a 13yo girlfriend. A fight ensued, the senior allegedly put August in a “bear hug” until he lost consciousness, then slammed him on the ground.

August’s neurologist says his injuries are consistent with blunt force trauma, not a fall.

Immediately after the incident, the children who witnessed the fight were ushered into the school office and forced to sign legal NDAs, prohibiting them from speaking to anyone about what happened.

Of course, minors can’t sign legal documents. You MUST take over this investigation, immediately.

The school district is lying. They’re covering up a crime. Sue their ass for everything they’ve got.

August Borden, a 15-year-old freshman football player at Deshler High School in Tuscumbia, Alabama, was airlifted to a Birmingham ICU on August 19, 2025, after sustaining severe injuries during an incident outside the school. He was found unconscious on the stairs in front of the school and suffered a skull fracture behind his sinus cavity, fractures to his orbital bones, and a concussion, resulting in him being unconscious for nearly two days. His family reported that he was covered in blood when they first saw him.

The incident occurred while Borden was walking from the weight room to the locker room after a workout, according to a statement from Tuscumbia City Schools. Supervising coaches were present, and employees immediately called 911 and initiated the school’s Emergency Action Plan for Athletics. The 911 center advised the coaches to begin CPR, though a pulse was never lost, and an ambulance arrived approximately five minutes later. The school has no security cameras in that area, which is over 100 yards from any entrance.

Borden was discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home, but he continues to experience headaches, blurred vision, and fatigue, sleeping for about 75% of the day. He has difficulty remembering the incident and has shown signs of cognitive delays, such as forgetting basic household locations. His family, including his mother Kristen Van Devender and stepfather Drew Van Devender, expressed frustration over the lack of transparency from school officials, stating that the initial narrative of a “traumatic fall” does not align with the severity of his injuries. They believe the school may have downplayed the incident, suggesting it was merely a fall, and are demanding answers and accountability.

The Tuscumbia Police Department, which initially investigated the case, transferred it to the Franklin County Juvenile Probation Office on August 28, 2025, due to all subjects and witnesses (except coaches) being under 18 years old. The Madison County District Attorney’s Office is providing assistance to the juvenile probation office. The family has expressed concern that the transfer may delay the investigation and hinder their quest for answers. They are also seeking community support for medical and legal expenses.

Borden’s biological father, Jason Borden, has reported receiving conflicting accounts of the incident, with some suggesting a fall and others implying a scuffle or attack by another student. The family remains hopeful for his recovery but is anxious about the long-term effects of his head trauma. They have urged the public to help by providing any information that could assist the investigation.

It seems the kid will be able to tell his tale. This isn’t going to go away.

That said, the police certainly don’t seem to be doing their job. They’re not there to protect members of the school board.

“Rumors are that a player, whose father is on the school board, is the perpetrator and is being protected.”

If so, this ought not be the world’s toughest who-dun-it.
Then swear out a complaint against the individual, file a massive suit, and start “discovery”. NDA’s signed by children without benefit of counsel = worthless, except for making whoever pursued them look very bad in court.

“Jason said he called August’s football coach, who told him his son was involved in “a scuffle” with another student.”

Following up on that seems like easy police work.

If he really cared about his kids they would not be in public school. If my daughter can teach her ther three boys at home (and they are way ahead of their age cohort) with one family income that is considerably below median, then so can 99% of people who feel understand what their children are getting in Public Day Prison can do it, too. I no longer have sympathy for folks who retain their attachment to Public Schools.
