A one-time Colorado “counselor of the year” is accused of sexually assaulting a female student over several years — and threatened to kill herself if the girl ever came forward, according to police.
Cassandra Poncelow, 40, met her accuser in her high school counseling office in the Poudre School District in Fort Collins, Colo. — and later began bringing her to her home for “sleepovers,” according to court documents obtained by 9News.
The student — who is now an adult — met with police in July and claimed she was assaulted more than 100 times over several years at Poncelow’s home.
Police did not say exactly when the alleged assaults occurred, but Poncelow worked for the school district from 2007 to 2024.
The student told police she felt like she wanted to die after the alleged sexual assault — but claimed Poncelow told her, “If you tell anyone, I’ll kill myself,” according to CBS News, citing the police report.
Poncelow — who has since become sober — later expressed shame, claiming she fell in love with the student while accepting that it “was not okay,” according to the police report.
Poncelow was named Colorado’s 2016 “counselor of the year” by the Colorado School Counseling Association and was a finalist for the American School Counselor of the Year award in 2018, the Coloradoan reported.
She was arrested Tuesday and is charged with sexual assault, sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, criminal attempt to commit sexual exploitation of children and aggravated sexual assault on a client by a psychotherapist.

Guilty
“who has since become sober”
Oh.
That’s nice.
Emotional blackmail of the immature and insecure.
This lasted for years. Her victim, a former student, will probably never fully get over it, but building some level of trust in other people is still possible, over time.
With aggravating circumstances!
Well now we know the criteria Colorado uses for cousoler of the year.
Not surprised, the Ca is likely even more depraved.
One of the consequences of legitimizing homosexuality.
It is more difficult to segregate people who are attracted to the people they have responsibility for.
And some of them are.
But the more dangerous is the one who is presentable, charming and kids think is just the best. Unless they are the victim.
Any time someone is "award winning" I always look at them closely. Yeah, mostly they are just nice people who enjoy working with children.
And then there are the other ones.
Sooo.... TIL that the relationship in Prince of Tides is not only actionable, unprofessional and can get your license taken, but that it’s also (at least in Colorado) criminal.
Yikes!
Best response to that is "That's nice ... you go do that."
But it takes a certain amount of fortitude and mental maturity to call their bluff.
What kid of parents allow an adult to have a “sleepover” with their child?
Looks like she really tried to avoid it. Good for her.
And crazy.
What kid of parents allow an adult to have a “sleepover” with their child?
Michael Jackson knew.
Yes; and 100 times before the kid said anything to anyone?
Kids should be raised to know that there are things they should not allow anyone to do to them. I learned that in Sunday school and at home.
This kid was let down by more than this teacher.
Her alma mater was proud enough to write a story about her when she won the honor, but when I went there I found this:
“Well, this is awkward.
It looks like the page you’re trying to find doesn’t exist. Use the search feature to find what you’re looking for.”
It is indeed “awkward.”
I'll occassionally get on a true crime kick and review some of the more novel takes on famous serial killers. John Wayne Gacy was no doubt "gay" and hid behind two beard wives. Many of the documentaries will inevitably hint, if not outright say, that if homosexuality, including 'gay marriage,' had been made legal and acceptable in Gacy's day, he likely wouldn't have been the prolific sex killer he was.
Utter garbage.
