Vietnam wants to be the next Asian tiger and it’s overhauling its economy to make it happen
The Columbian ^ | August 17, 2025 | Aniruddha Ghosal

Beneath red banners and a gold bust of revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi’s central party school, Communist Party chief To Lam declared the arrival of “a new era of development” late last year. The speech was more than symbolic— it signaled the launch of what could be Vietnam’s most ambitious economic overhaul in decades.

Vietnam aims to get rich by 2045 and become Asia’s next “tiger economy” — a term used to describe the earlier ascent of countries like South Korea and Taiwan. The challenge ahead is steep: Reconciling growth with overdue reforms, an aging population, climate risks and creaking institutions. There’s added pressure from President Donald Trump over Vietnam’s trade surplus with the U.S., a reflection of its astounding economic trajectory.

In 1990, the average Vietnamese could afford about $1,200 worth of goods and services a year, adjusted for local prices. Today, that figure has risen by more than 13 times to $16,385.

Somehow, it seems that we could have saved over 58,000 American lives and hundreds of thousands of casualties if we had simply walked away from NV after the French left...

NV has taken on the aspect of another South Korea, industrially and economically...IMHO...

[I am not going by Vietnam PR. China pulled out after one month without completing it’s objectives. First of all, Vietnam remained in Cambodia for another decade, after they kicked out China’s client, the Khmer Rouge. Also, they didn’t like that Vietnam was in the USSR’s orbit, not theirs.]

China’s goal was political. It had an excessively inflated view of its military capability, but the idea was to punish Vietnam for moving against its genocidal ally in Cambodia, not overrun and annex Vietnam.

That it failed to achieve its stretch target isn’t particularly significant. MACV took almost 5 weeks to dislodge the NVA from Hue (the battle depicted in Full Metal Jacket) and it had the benefit of 24/7 tac air and the full aerial panoply of supply interdiction assets.

Given the equipment and experience limitations of the Chinese force, it gave a good account of itself. While its inflated self-image was unwarranted, the enlisted men did banzai charges and were butchered without faltering. Having learned that massed charges were a mistake and that they weren’t in fact superior to the Vietnamese in military skill, they buckled down and resized their objectives to fit their new understanding of where they stood relative to their adversary. They wiped out an elite Vietnamese division at Lang Son, then withdrew with everything they could carry, having wiped out anyone who might have given chase.

While the Chinese failed to achieve their initial objective, they did give Vietnam a bloody nose and inflict more damage than they took. Parity in military dead, 100K dead Vietnamese civilians and Vietnam’s loss of Soviet factory equipment suggests that this was at best a draw for Vietnam, and at worst, a defeat.

OH YEAH. Kiss, Kiss and let's makeup and bury all the years and years of communist North Vietnam's rape, murder and torture of South Vietnam's citizens.

The brutal campaign of assassinations of any and all who didn't bow down and kiss their shiny yellow asses.

They were equal opportunity murdering scum. They killed Random tribes people, mail carriers, petty politicians, teachers, nurses, doctors their wives, husbands, their children, any noncombatant was fair game to them.

Then there's the many and varied violations of the LAWS of war, the Geneva Convention. Strapping bombs to little kids.......OH YEAH GOO TIMES.

And how about the abuse and torture and out right murder of American POW's. Don't forget the help and support that USSAR and Mainland China provided and their party in the killing, rape, murder and torture of South Vietnam's citizens and our US service men and women.

Remember that guy (A solder) when asked how many people had he killed? He replied that none that he knew of because he only ever killed communists................

Gan-Ganowicz, he was right then and he's still right. Always remember that communists are animals, they are godless and should never be trusted or allowed to grow.

The French were finished in 1954, JFK pumping troop masses into Vietnam was almost a decade later, we didn’t just take over from the French.

On a similar note, being able to squeeze climate change into an article is like Hollywood squeezing fagotry into a movie. They’ve both got to be somewhere in the narrative.

I understood that...
A decade later is later...😉

Lots of Dongs for the taking.

Very inflated Dongs at that. By inventing the printing-press, Johannes Gutenberg also invented the loony-left.
