Experts are at a loss to explain the fall in alcohol consumption among Republicans in particular.

However, key figures within the party and current administration have been clear about their sobriety and thoughts on alcohol.

Most notably President Trump has sworn off alcohol after the tragic death of his brother who died from alcoholism.

Health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr, the architect of the 'Make America Healthy Again' movement, has also been open about his sobriety.

Influential figures within the MAGA camp, such as Tucker Carlson, have also promoted abstinence.

Some researchers have suggested it could be part of a broader shift in demographic and voting patterns.

'Republicans made a big push in toss-up states [such as] Arizona and Pennsylvania in 2024 to register more Republicans, especially with far-right Christians, Mormons and Amish,' Mark Will-Weber, author of a book on US presidents' drinking habits, told the Financial Times.

'These religious groups abstain from alcohol.'

“Republicans are leading the charge against alcohol consumption in the US.”

Written as if it’s a BAD thing.

Interesting that the decline of alcohol consumption generally corresponds with the legalization of cannabis.

Hmm. 🤔

I am not surprised that Republicans are “leading the charge against alcohol consumption”.

I see it as a money thing.

As conservatives (using “conservatives” as a verbal stand-in for “Republicans” to make the point) we are more likely to believe in self-sufficiency and fiscal responsibility.

We are less likely to go into hock to drink if it is going to affect our financial well being. When it costs $10-12 to buy a drink with dinner...we are less likely to do so, and partially because we likely go out to dinner less.

Why drink liquor when you can smoke pot legally?

People drink when there is economic uncertainty and recession/depression.

Clearly Trump’s making America great relieves those tensions.

Think how much more people would drink if Kamala were president. The Dems would drink more because of her example. The Republicans would drink more because of her.

I find that as I'm getting older, I have less interest in events designed around the sole purpose of drinking. I still enjoy a nice glass or two of wine with a meal; I enjoy a well-made mixed drink after a round of golf with my buddies, and I enjoy a tropical drink when I'm on vacation. I just don't want to drink for hours on end, with the sole purpose of getting drunk.

I know it's not all about age--I have friends who drink just about every day. They still like the events where drinking is encouraged. It's just not for me.

The cause is Price... They have overpriced themselves right out of business. It is double over fair market price and folks are tired of being screwed by the industry price fixing.

Have you seen the price of a mixed drink at a concert or a sport event ?

$15.00 is typical.

And some of it may distill down to , it is just too expensive.

A pint at the pub is $8. A cocktail is getting close to $20. Last six pack I bought was $14. I like drinking but I like my money more. The only thing that really hasn’t gone up is the rot gut liquor.

I seem to recall:

I read so much about evils of drinking that I decided to give it up. Once I quit reading I wouldn't drink anything stronger than pop. Of course, pop will drink most anything.
