Americans are not a healthy bunch, neither physically nor mentally. And we we getting sicker. We have an unnaturally high level of mental illness…We are addicted to medicines…We are killing ourselves in record numbers.
Yet Americans often miss the strength of Europe because they rarely stray beyond its touristy city centres. Big city Europe is in the process of being smoothed into a generic, boring singular entity. This soulless Americanisation has accelerated dramatically over the last few decades, driven by globalisation, tourism and secular capitalism. The result is McEurope — a chain of big cities where chunks of each are the same.
….Of all the smallish towns I have stayed in along France’s Rhône Valley, Tournon-sur-Rhône is my least favourite. It’s a loud town with an old expressway, Route Nationale 86, running through it.
Yet even in Tournon, on a boring Wednesday afternoon, there was an active social scene, a communal sense of needing to be, if not directly with other people, then at least near them. At one local café, friends, colleagues, couples, families came and went. Those who arrived alone, mostly older regulars, came to sit, watch the world and chat with waiters and fellow patrons.
… This cafe culture, which I saw every day in every community along the Rhône Valley, is just one example of France’s healthy sense of communalism. The socialising here isn’t “networking” — but rather to become part of a collective, with a shared understanding of who you are (in this case, French) and why it’s good to be that. This sense of self so ingrained, it’s not explicitly recognised.
That feeling of knowing who you are, of recognising that you’re a valuable part of something bigger and better than yourself, is far less common in the United States…

All part of the globalist plan.
I’d rather have ‘American diner’ culture.
In these tortured times, the vanished “Third Space” is being acknowledged and written about more often than in the “Olden Days”.
That space and time went away long ago.
Until wages and living standards catch up, for most, it will remain just an American Dream.
When I was growing up in Wallingford, CT, we had more Luncheonettes than diners. They are mostly gone.
Nah! Civilizations always collapse naturally. Our is due.
I’m picturing a lot of “Karens” complaining to the Manager that “that man” has been sitting at that table for over an hour! I want that table! I’ve been waiting! Make him move! I insist!
Spending time out in public is painful these days. Too many unpleasant people who think they are the Main Character.
An omniscient being! I have always wanted to meet one of those!
And probably would whine about it's lack of "Perversity".
Socialist European Cafe “culture” paid for by the U.S. taxpayer.
As a trucker I appreciated having to go get off the Interstate and see real America. Everywhere along the Interstate looks the same by the exits. Same restaurant chains, stores, gas stations, hotels, and truck stops.
Church small groups. Get to know like-minded people. See them face to face like we used to. I still have that experience because of small groups.
No matter your age you can find some kind of social group to join, if you want to.
Personally sitting at a cafe wouldn’t do much for me. I’d rather join a class or something of that nature.
Add to that the suicide rate of the USA and Sweden are almost identical. This guy is your usual self hating American.
I do miss the cafe and street life of Latin America and parts of Europe
Check out history. There is a very large number of civilizations that preceded ours; and, they all collapsed. Our civilization has followed the "Stages of Civilization" same as the others, now we are exhibiting all off the signs of the terminal stages. This has nothing at all to do with god-like powers. Mere observation tells the story.
The Eight Stages of the Rise and Fall of Civilizations
What are the 7 stages of an empire?
The last one is a rather scholarly article, and there are many like it on the host site. I was surprised to find others who have observed what I have while coming to the same conclusion.
Sitting at a sidewalk cafe in coutries overrun my the muzz does not sound very bright.
Sudden Jihad syndrome and all. Plus you are not allowed to be armed.
Past performance does not gurantee future results.
GFU, arrogant Euroweenies.
