Study finds vitamin B3 and green tea compound help aging brain cells clean up

Researchers have identified a promising nonpharmaceutical treatment that rejuvenates aging brain cells and clears away the buildup of harmful proteins associated with Alzheimer's disease.

In a paper, the team reports that a combination of naturally occurring compounds—nicotinamide (a form of vitamin B3) and epigallocatechin gallate (a green tea antioxidant)—can reinstate levels of guanosine triphosphate, an essential energy molecule in brain cells.

In tests on neurons in a dish, the treatment reversed age-related cellular deficits and improved the brain cells' ability to clear damaging amyloid protein aggregates, an Alzheimer's hallmark.

"As people age, their brains show a decline in neuronal energy levels, which limits the ability to remove unwanted proteins and damaged components," said Gregory Brewer.

"We found that restoring energy levels helps neurons regain this critical cleanup function."

The researchers used a genetically encoded fluorescent sensor called GEVAL to track live guanosine triphosphate levels in neurons from aged Alzheimer's model mice. They discovered that free GTP levels declined with age—particularly in mitochondria, the cells' energy hubs—leading to impaired autophagy, the process by which cells eliminate damaged components.

But when aged neurons were treated for just 24 hours with nicotinamide and epigallocatechin gallate, GTP levels were restored to those typically seen in younger cells. This revival triggered a cascade of benefits: improved energy metabolism; activation of key GTPases involved in cellular trafficking, Rab7 and Arl8b; and efficient clearance of amyloid beta aggregates. Oxidative stress, another contributor to neurodegeneration, was also reduced.

"This study highlights GTP as a previously underappreciated energy source driving vital brain functions," Brewer said.

"By supplementing the brain's energy systems with compounds that are already available as dietary supplements, we may have a new path toward treating age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease."

This pairing of nutrients reversed issues with Alzheimer’s proteins, in tests.

Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) is mentioned as being mostly inactivated in the blood, so perhaps a time release form or a liposomal form could be more helpful. I take a small amount of nicotinamide riboside powder a day (1/64 of a teaspoon), in addition to a normal time release multivitamin.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is in green tea and a single tea bag may provide 50 or more milligrams of EGCG.

Just time a cup of green tea with your vitamin B3 and see how it goes.

I just noticed I previously pinged Red Badger’s version of this, so I will get ask to remove this.

Nicotinamide is a precursor to the production of NAD+, which is in the mitochondria of every cell in your body. You would die in 30 seconds without NAD+ providing energy to the mitochondria. It is available in capsules and powdered form as either NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) or NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide). I prefer NMN because it doesn’t require as many steps to convert to NAD+ as NR and is slightly cheaper.

It occurs naturally in milk and the body produces it naturally but the production declines after age 40 or so. It has many health benefits beyond those in the article including improved energy levels and mental alertness. A good source of information on this supplement is available on the YouTube channel, ThePulse.

Also of note EGCG was supposed to work againt covid. We pi ked up a few bottles during covid because at the time because we didn’t have ivermectin.

Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) (vitamin B3)

Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) is one of three forms of vitamin B3. I take a bit of yeast daily for all B vitamins except B12. I don't know if yeast has Nicotinamide in it, or will produce it in the gut.

It acts as an ionophore to drive zinc inside a cell. That alters the pH such that the enzymes needed to replicate the virus cease to function. Another option is quercetin as an ionophore. You can get a liquid that includes quercetin and zinc for best absorption. quercetin also functions as a senolytic to prompt senescent cells to move to apoptosis.

Yep, we took zinc along with it- we did end up getting ivermectin though and used it instead. It “seemed to work” on several colds or flues, and quickly too- but 2-3 or so it didn’t seem to do much. Had covid 3 times that I know of, and it wo4ked for 2,of those times, shortening the symptoms significantly, but one time it didn’t do much.

EGCG --- I get this with Bulk Supplements Organic Green Tea Powder as found on Amazon, eBay, their own Bulk Supps website. I drink this instead of coffee for the caffeine boost too.

Isn’t it amazing how zinc will kill C19 but gets really effective when it has “an ionophore to drive zinc inside a cell” And there is a range of ionophores to do this.

Zinc on shingled roofs will kill mold. Zinc is what coats galvanized steel. Galvanized steel air ducts etc. on roofs will protect the shingles below them from getting mold. Mold is in the same ballpark as C19 virus.

You’re right that the zinc coating on galvanized steel could play a role in inhibiting mold growth, and this could explain why you’re seeing cleaner shingles under air ducts on roofs in Florida. Let’s dive into why zinc might act as a mold killer in this context:How Zinc Inhibits Mold:Zinc’s Antimicrobial Properties:Zinc, the coating used in galvanized steel, has natural antimicrobial and antifungal properties. When rainwater comes into contact with the zinc coating, it can leach small amounts of zinc ions into the water. These ions are toxic to mold, algae, and other microorganisms, preventing their growth on surfaces where the runoff flows.
This is similar to how zinc strips are commonly installed at the peak of roofs to prevent algae and mold growth. Rainwater washes zinc particles down the roof, creating an inhospitable environment for mold and algae like Gloeocapsa magma (the black-streaking algae common in Florida).

Runoff Effect:The galvanized steel air ducts on the roofs you’re observing likely release zinc ions into the rainwater that flows over them. This zinc-laden runoff then contacts the shingles directly beneath, creating a localized zone where mold and algae struggle to grow. This would explain why the shingles under the ducts appear cleaner and mold-free compared to exposed areas.

Florida’s Environment:Florida’s hot, humid, and rainy climate is a breeding ground for mold and algae on roofs. The frequent rain ensures that zinc ions are regularly washed from the galvanized steel onto the shingles below, providing ongoing protection in those specific areas.

Why This Works Specifically for Galvanized Steel:Galvanized Steel’s Durability: The zinc coating on galvanized steel is designed to protect the steel from corrosion, but as it weathers, it slowly releases zinc into the environment. This gradual release is enough to inhibit mold without requiring additional treatments.
Localized Effect: The mold-killing effect is most pronounced directly under or near the ducts because that’s where the zinc-rich runoff flows. Areas farther away from the ducts may not benefit as much, which aligns with your observation of cleaner shingles specifically under the ducts.

My great grandmother-in-law just passed her driving test. She’s 106 and the NM DMV said she may be the oldest driver in NM.

All her daughters and granddaughters are alive except the one that died in Vietnam.

She eats two eggs a day, lots of fish, and chugs coffee and tea all day. Cold hot green normal, whatever. Not shy about caffeine or hamburger meat, which she puts in everything.

All her food is homemade except triscuits, which she eats as a snack in the afternoon. Makes lots of sourdough.

Gardens and does nature walks (easy, about 2 miles, takes her 40 minutes), alone with her dogs.

She’s definitely old and we expect to find her dead on a trail one day, but that’s the way she likes it.

I’ve been doing the green tea. This morning I started the timed release b3.

I’ve been on and off various forms of b3 for years.

no rhyme or reason to it.

Good info on using zinc to suppress mold and algae. I worked some contracts in Florida and saw first hand how the environment encourages all manner of unpleasant growth. Algae still gains a foothold in my area (SE Idaho).
