That was a good long run. What an exciting life to have lived.

Keep the “fake moon landing” freaks off this thread. Lovell doesn’t deserve their BS.

Apollo 13, the Right Stuff and October Sky movies were all it took to guide my son to a career as an astronautical engineer.

I remember the near disaster that occurred on Apollo 13, when I was a young skull full of mush. I was impressed with how Capt Lovell kept his cool and avoided a tragedy. RIP, Capt.

My wife just told me and then our daughter called a moment later to tell us. I remember Borman and Lovell in Gemini VII more than their Apollo 8 flight with Anders.
RIP, National Hero.

What an amazing man. And from all the interviews I’ve seen of him, humble, kind, decent, adventurous, brave, and cool under pressure.

Lovell was a true American hero who had unique adventures in space on Apollo 8 and Apollo 13.
Now he belongs to the ages.
May he rest in peace.

I met and had lunch with him back in the 80s. A nicer and more interesting man you could not find. A true American hero. God bless and keep Jim Lovel. He was a treasure.

Yes, we've seen it too often back when TV channels signed off, but I think this poem is appropriate for Cmdr. Lovell and all who've pushed the boundaries and became examples for the rest of us to strive for:
"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun,
split clouds
and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of -
wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.
Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along
and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air.
"Up, up the long delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace,
where never lark, or even eagle, flew;
and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
the high untrespassed sanctity of space,
put out my hand
and touched
the face
of God."
