A famous pioneer aviator, the late Otto Lilienthal of pre-Wright brothers time, would often say, ‘To design a flying machine is nothing; to build it is something; to test it is everything’.

It may get there in 30 days but it is going fast at that point. It will have to be flipped around and “brake” for half the ride if they plan to stop off and visit. Otherwise wave as you go past. Would like to see the math on a visiting trip.

And it is not very much. 1.35 pound-force.

Russia flew US astronauts to the International Space Station for years after NASA cancelled the shuttle program and had no ready replacement. Had Space X, a private company, not been able to develop reliable manned space flight capability quickly, the US would still be paying Russia exorbitant sums to fly our astronauts to the space station or we would have abandoned the station by now. Despite billions more given by NASA to Boeing than Space X for manned space flights, Boeing has yet to get its Starliner qualified.
The Russian government continues to invest heavily in rocket technology, as does the Chinese government. While the US wastes billions on defense contractor grift, our adversaries are pouring money into pure research to develop technologies that leapfrog our capabilities. It is foolish to underestimate their determination and emerging capabilities.

That’s all right. NASA’s way ahead of the Russians in the all important category of DEI.
