A mosquito-borne virus that leaves victims in crippling pain and has triggered Covid-era restrictions in China is already in the US, experts say.
Chikungunya virus can cause sudden, agonizing joint pain in the hands and feet, sometimes so severe that it leaves sufferers unable to move normally for months.
Southern China is
currently battling its largest outbreak since at least 2008, with more than 7,000 cases recorded in Foshan, at the epicenter, and infections in 12 other major cities. Heavy rains and warm weather have fueled a surge in mosquitoes, driving the outbreak.
Dr Louisa Messenger, a mosquito researcher in
Nevada, told the Daily Mail: 'This outbreak in China is very concerning. It could already be here in the US — and really it's just one plane flight away.'
Officials have already detected 46 cases of chikungunya in the US this year, all linked to travelers returning to the country from abroad.
It is unclear how many of these are linked to China's outbreak, but the
CDC has issued a warning for travelers to the country over the virus, as well as for nine other countries including Bolivia and Sri Lanka.
Estimates suggest 1.6million people travel between the US and China every year, with experts saying it only takes a single bite from a mosquito on one infected traveler to allow the disease to spread locally in America.
The US has experienced limited local transmission of the disease previously, most recently in 2014 and 2015 after cases were detected in Florida and Texas.
Chikungunya is carried by the Aedes mosquito, which has black and white striped legs and remains common across much of the US.
Officials say infections are usually detected quickly and public health teams respond fast to prevent wider spread.
This normally involves the widespread...

Will masks help prevent mosquito bites?
—
oh yes skeeters hate masks, they are so terrifying to the poor little buggers that they have been known to fall over dead at the sight of one.

There’s a solution for this. It’s initials are D.D.T. I remember those days, the mosquitoes weren’t as bad back then as they are now.

No, but if we stand at least 6 feet apart the mosquitos will be too exhausted to bite more than 1 of us.

The people worrying about this are the greater threat.

"It's called arthritis. :)"
Exactly, and it's an equal opportunity irritant that likes to inflame every joint in your body.

I've got arthritis in just about every joint in my body. My left shoulder is so bad they told me I need a complete shoulder replacement, which I won't be doing. Most recent cortisone helped.
I woke up on Monday with no pain in my feet. Two hours later I put my regular shoes on to head out of the house, and suddenly I've got pain in two different areas of both feet. It's not the shoes. I've worn them for months with no discomfort. There is no swelling, or bruising. I didn't do anything which required activity the day or evening before. It isn't Plantars Facitiitis. I had that years ago and this is nothing like it. It doesn't hurt when I'm sitting. It only hurts when I stand and walk. Gave it a few days to go away, so will call the orthopedic doctor tomorrow to set up an appointment. I'm almost 78. Sucks to get old.

"It’s called ‘rheumatoid arthritis’."
My oldest son was initially diagnosed with that many years ago, but his new rheumatologist thinks it's actually psoriatic arthritis. He has been on two Hydroxychloroquine pills a day for many years, and has to give himself an injection of Humira every two weeks. He's been very fortunate that the meds keep his symptoms away. He's 58.

I’m 61. I just take painkillers occasionally - only when it get’s really bad.
I shock and surprise people with my groans until they get used to it.

I groan and complain a lot at home. Do a lot of swearing to myself when I'm out in the grocery store. People probably think I'm a crazy old lady talking to myself. I don't worry about it. We've earned the right to moan and groan all we want.

“My oldest son was initially diagnosed with that many years ago, but his new rheumatologist thinks it’s actually psoriatic arthritis. “
That’s what I am dealing with. I take Binzelx once a month. Humira, Cosentyx, Embrell and others didn’t work. Taltz worked for a while ten stopped working. For a while I was going to infusion but that stopped with the new meds. The Leflunomide helps.
It hurts just to type this. And the worst part is my current med only lasts three weeks so the last week before the injection I am miserable. And I’m not allowed to take Vicodin because of an accident that happened during Covid (meds interacting wrong) where I almost died. So I smoke weed to lessen the symptoms.
