WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), the Senate Democratic leader, has spoken out against the proposed Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger.
In remarks Thursday (July 31, 2025) on the Senate floor, Schumer said approval of the merger “would cut down the industry from four major players to just three, pushing us even further down the road of dangerous consolidation and monopoly power.”
Schumer noted the companies are saying the merger will promote competition, improve service, and benefit workers and customers. “History tells us the opposite,” he said.
“The last four decades of railroad mergers have led to worse service, worse safety, worse working conditions, higher costs for shippers – which ultimately means higher prices for consumers,” he said. “They also promise no union jobs will be cut. But we’ve heard that before, from the same executives who’ve laid off thousands of workers while raking in record profits.”
Schumer called the merger “a hostile takeover of America’s infrastructure,” and called it a test for the Trump administration: “Will they side with the railroad oligarchs, or … with workers and families?”
Previously, Nebraska’s two senators have said they support the merger, while Sens. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) and Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) have written the Surface Transportation Board, asking it to consider the interests of shippers and consumers [see “Senators write STB …,” Trains.com, July 30, 2025].

Schmuckie, there are only really two political parties in the US.
And the two collude against America.
Chuck must not have been slipped a cash-filled envelope yet.
Schumckie is a political oligarch.
“Chuck must not have been slipped a cash-filled envelope yet.”
OOOOkaay thank you. I wondered why Chuckie would say this? Now I know. YEP YEP YEP YEP YEP.
I knew something was wrong with this article after seeing the one about Trump telling him where to go so I’d thought I’d post and get some answers.
Schumckie is King of the oligarchs.
“would cut down the industry from four major players to just three, pushing us even further down the road of dangerous consolidation

I agree.
If Democrats were in the White House would he talk a different language?
I’m wondering this too.
I have to re-evaluate my stance. I can’t believe for the first time I agree with Schmucky.
We would still have 5 railroads serving the country after the merger, 2 are Canadian-based.
I’d rather have teeth pulled than listen to Schumer speak.
Schumer should be the model on why we need term limits.
.
Relax, Chucky just bought a million dollars worth of Railroad futures and he needs a few days for the market to react.
The rail merger may be necessary to assure long term survival.
The root problem is the constantly growing trucking business. Anybody that wants to can go into the trucking business. Thousands have. Thousands have failed.
Large trucking companies have failed because of the competition that ultimately fails.
We’re just as bad. Suddenly pushing nutritious foods is a wonderful idea. Ten years ago we were yelling and screaming about how awful that is to do.
