The Houthis will resume attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea if those ships have ties to companies that work with Israeli ports, the Yemen-based group announced this week.
While the Houthis are calling it a “fourth phase of escalation,” the move from the group is the phase of the Houthis’ Red Sea attacks when they expanded their strikes to any ship that visited Israeli ports or was associated with a company that had ties to Israel.
The last time the Houthis announced they would attack ships, the United States had multiple ships in the Red Sea. This time, it has none.
The Houthis attacked two Greek-owned ships, sailing under Liberian flags, sinking both, in early July, the first indications that the Houthis, which had been focused on striking Israel, may resume maritime attacks. In the case of MV Eternity C, the Houthis killed mariners aboard the ship, while taking others as hostages.
The Wall Street Journal reported that no naval ship — U.S. or partner — helped the Eternity C as it faced off against the Houthis in a 16-hour long battle. Another commercial ship helped rescue mariners.
“The Houthis are once again trying to position themselves as the primary defenders of Gaza,” Albasha said in his email. “In this phase, they said they will target any shipping company or any vessel belonging to a company that does business with Israel. They explicitly stated that ships from any country would be targeted, which clearly suggests that U.S.-linked vessels could be included.”
The Houthis and the U.S. have a ceasefire in effect, as long as the Houthis do not attack U.S. ships.

Time to go fishing for Houthis.
Dangle the bait, and then blow them out of the water when they bite.
Why should they get food?
Finally an article about Houthis that doesn’t call them Houthi Rebels.
With a little help from their Russian friends in the GRU.
Who wants to be on the receiving end of accusations of genocide by starvation? Israel is being accused of starving Gazans.
Agree.
Because I am sooooo benevolent. But then the mining of Japan in WW II kept out food., so let them eat camel dung.
Israel and the US need to stop being nice guys and ignore euro-left “international community”.
Announce that by this action Houthis have agreed to accept resettle Gazan refugees. Deport Hamas and their supporters to someplace in Houthi territory. How do I know they are Hamas supporters? They have taken no actions to help Israel find hostages and prosecute the criminal that perpetrated the heinous acts of Oct. 7.
When the Houthis cry foul tell then this action will continue untill they publicly sit down to negotiations with the Israeli Government. I am sure between them Egypt, Al-Jazeera and the Saudis can insure the public negotiations are easy to view in Houthi territory.
I often wonder why they still have an operational port. Oh, we’ll launch a couple of missiles and drop some bombs and pat ourselves on the back. What we should do is send a DDG or two and bombard the port and the city with with naval gunfire from a mile or two out. We haven’t done this since Haiphong in 1972. Naval gunfire on a populated area is devastating and I don’t think they have anything capable of coming close to a DDG. Have the ship cruise around and blow a lot of stuff up with impunity. It would send a strong message.
Even a 5”54cal gun has a range of 13 miles and can fire 15+ rounds per minute. A couple ships could chew the ports into debris fields in a couple hours. The gunner mates would love it.
I never saw Star Wars past one viewing the first movie.
Isn’t there some group of silly little aliens in one of them?
That’s what I think the name Houthis should mean. Sort of like Munchkins in the Wizard of Oz.
