Astronomy Picture of the Day - Coronal Loops on the Sun

Explanation: Our Sun frequently erupts in loops. Hot solar plasma jumps off the Sun's surface into prominences, with the most common type of prominence being a simple loop. The loop shape originates from the Sun's magnetic field, which is traced by spiraling electrons and protons. Many loops into the Sun's lower corona are large enough to envelop the Earth and are stable enough to last days. They commonly occur near active regions that also include dark sunspots. The featured panel shows four loops, each of which was captured near the Sun's edge during 2024 and 2025. The images were taken by a personal telescope in Mantova, Italy and in a very specific color of light emitted primarily by hydrogen. Some solar prominences suddenly break open and eject particles into the Solar System, setting up a space weather sequence that can affect the skies and wires of Earth.

The sun is actually too hot to be on fire. At a certain temperature chemical reactions are no longer possible because the atoms are simply too energetic for the exchange of electrons. That is why a plasma is considered a fourth state of matter apart from solid liquid or gas.

And Earth is just a small dot in the center of one.

Meanwhile, the Parker Solar Probe is Space Truckin around the Sun. At one point, it reached 430,000 miles per hour!!.

A massive solar eruption occurred May 7, 2025.

The earth would be about the size of this circle > o <

All the earth's nuclear weapon stockpiles on earth detonating at the same time on the sun would not even be detectable. Not a blip.

The sun converts about 600 million tons of hydrogen to helium every second in its core. That’s equivalent to about 3 million times the combined nuclear arsenal of the U.S. and U.S.S.R. at the height of the Cold War, by my crude calculations.
