What does rest in power mean?
Dictionary.com ^ | 3/4/20 | Dictionary.com

Posted on 07/24/2025 8:00:48 AM PDT by DallasBiff

A variation on rest in peace, rest in power is used, especially in Black and LGBTQ communities, to commemorate a person whose death is considered unjust or wrongful. In this way, rest in power is a call to continue the struggle for social justice and as a show of solidarity.

Rest in power is also used to pay respect to a person, especially a person of color, who made a difference in the lives of minority communities. It is sometimes used to note the death of a person felt to have died too soon or senselessly, or a person who was influential or meaningful to people more generally.

I also saw this used for Ozzy. I guess it refers to the struggle goes on or something.

I still don’t get what “speaking truth to power” means; I hate obscure, non-grammatical expressions.

Well, I got an education in why blacks can’t or don’t swim, courtesy of PBS, and Black History Month. The swim/dive team coach at Howard University...he’s also an alum, so you know he’s no dummy (am I right, Kamala?)...said that when blacks were removed from their idyllic homelands, they gave up their fishing and pearl-diving lifestyles, and were brought to the American south, where water represented freedom. If you could get to the water, you could escape. But, whitey knew this, too, so punishment for going near the water was severe. Over the generations, slave mothers taught their kids not to go near the water. There you have it.

The pics I saw of Howard’s swim/dive team showed folks that look about as black as Kamala. No crocodiles in the pool, I presume.

“Rest in power” falls into the same category as whoever started renaming speed bumps “speed humps” and then “traffic calming strips” and spending taxpayer money to change all the signs. Always a do-gooder somewhere doing “good.”

What absolute crap. Whether slave or free, backs worked the rice plantations with wet or flooded paddies and also the entire fishin' crabbin' shrimpin' coasts from Norfolk to Miami, and around to New Orleans.

It must mean that if you're hopped up on fentanyl and meth and then die while interacting with the cops you're somehow special.

Wow, that’s a new one. And completely unreadable, if you had not put the standard one next to it.
