Well, I got an education in why blacks can’t or don’t swim, courtesy of PBS, and Black History Month. The swim/dive team coach at Howard University...he’s also an alum, so you know he’s no dummy (am I right, Kamala?)...said that when blacks were removed from their idyllic homelands, they gave up their fishing and pearl-diving lifestyles, and were brought to the American south, where water represented freedom. If you could get to the water, you could escape. But, whitey knew this, too, so punishment for going near the water was severe. Over the generations, slave mothers taught their kids not to go near the water. There you have it.
The pics I saw of Howard’s swim/dive team showed folks that look about as black as Kamala. No crocodiles in the pool, I presume.

Whether slave or free, backs worked the rice plantations with wet or flooded paddies and also the entire fishin' crabbin' shrimpin' coasts from Norfolk to Miami, and around to New Orleans.
