Reminds me of a story about a search and rescue operation, in Oregon. A deputy said, in a sound byte “We found clothing...human clothing....”
Shorts and sandals for the jungle?
I've never been to Guatemala but even in Upstate NY, if one goes into the woods in summer with shorts and sandals, you'll be nearly eaten alive by insects.
I need to send this article to a friend of mine. She is an avid birder. She actually puts out a calendar with pictures of birds on it. She just got back from a trip to Newfoundland. Where she posted countless pictures of Puffins.
When you are on a recreational trip like that , you MUST stay with your group! Forget about being a modern day Robinson Crusoe or exploring the Green Mansions of an Amazon jungle and maybe discover a beautiful Virgin girl waiting to meet you. Just presume that no one knows you are here, and no one is go to come out looking for you.
I was wondering how he got lost if he was with a group. Decided to go back by himself, sad.
Searching to see a Queztal, I bet.
A lilac shirt, sandals and shorts.....

If for nothing else, that sound like stupid jungle attire to to me.
Paging Dr. Brennan
The city of Tikal is quite large, even by modern standards. The Mayans took engineering seriously. The reason their pyramids are so high is because the jungle canopy is also very high, and they needed to see above it.
And to do this, they first built very thick slabs of concrete, made from hand ground limestone. Which is why some of the areas in the city are still flat and look like sports fields. They also built concrete lined artificial lakes, for a consistent water supply.
In total, it takes about 4 1/2 hours to take a walking tour to see the city. A hot, humid tour. Worth it, if you are healthy and fit. Best bet, fly from Guatemala City to the airport somewhat near Tikal, then back after your tour.
I told ya bird watching g was dangerous! Take,up skydiving instead, way less risky
So.......they're not ruling out the possibility they found someone else out there who was wearing a lilac shirt, sandals, and shorts?
