A bulge in the jet stream across American skies is set to trigger an extreme heat dome this week - bringing triple-figure temperatures to large swathes of the country.
Nearly 85 million Americans, from South Dakota to Texas and North Carolina to Florida, are already experiencing the extreme heat warnings.
But the sweltering conditions are expected to intensify this week - causing temperatures to swell into the high 90s and surpass 100s in some areas.
Dallas and Kansas City are among the densely-populated urban areas where the heat index is expected to go above 100F, triggering a drought due to the lack of rainfall.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Chad Merrill said: 'This has the look of a long-lasting heat wave with limited rainfall.
'Drought will expand through the central Plains by mid-August and worsen in Kansas and Nebraska, where there are already pockets of moderate to extreme drought.'
The heat wave could continue until the last weekend of July in the Plains and South, before the rising temperatures move westward towards the Rockies.
A heat dome is a high-pressure atmospheric system that causes warm air to be pushed to the Earth's surface - often becoming trapped for longer periods of time.

Can you teach him to walk on your treadmill? Or is there a mall that allows dogs, in your area?

Oh my, you mean in July in TEXAS it might be 100F?? Help!!! The sky is falling!!!!
😂😂😂👍. Rock lobstah!
You worry about your own weather.
TE I have to post this because every year someone doesn’t take precautions and dies of heat stroke. They don’t understand how hot “hot” really is in summer time!
this would have NEVER happened if Trump hadn’t fired so many people from NWS and NOAA!
It’s HOT in Tampa. . And then, it rains!
My jab was not directed at you, Morgana. ✌️ ❤️ 🕊
And we’re havin’ fun fo’ shizzle
In the cool California drizzle.
In the desert foothills north of Phoenix, we have only cracked 100 degrees 15 times this month and 110 only once. We will be in the upper 80s to upper 90s this week with low humidity (as expected).
It’s been “unseasonably pleasant” in California, all spring and summer so far.
It has been very nice in San Diego, yet we get Excessive Heat warnings when the forecasted high is 81 degrees. WTH?
See my post yesterday:
Is it heat exhaustion or heat stroke? Here are the symptoms to watch for

Thankfully this doesn’t affect me, though I’m still glad I picked my wild raspberries already.
There's a big difference between the Coast and North County and out to Escondido.
A 100F temperature in Dallas and Kansas City is a "crisis" only in a pampered society.
Unusually cool in Phoenix, AZ right now.
Yeah, I had to laugh when I saw the heat warning. It's supposed to hit 80 today. This is the mildest July in recent memory. I'm hoping it continues through August and September, but that's probably too much to ask for.
There are one or two shady parks, but he wants to walk too far. Getting back to the car is slow. He is having problems with his hind legs, mostly because he is chubby and wants to chase neighbor dogs at the fence. The pain meds work somewhat. Walks now take three times as long because he wants to sit down a lot. A six o’clock walk might end at 8. 🙄
~82 degrees today with brisk Trade Winds today... Need to keep the tee-shots down...
