7,000-Year-Old Native American Village Identified on Island in Kodiak Archipelago

Alaska Public Media reports that archaeologists from the Alutiiq Museum have discovered several new Native American village sites on Shuyak Island, which is located in the Kodiak Archipelago. The Alutiiq/Sugpiaq people have inhabited areas around the archipelago for thousands of years. The recent survey identified one village on Shuyak that dates back 7,000 years, which researchers believe is the oldest inhabited site ever found on the island. The team was also surprised by the discovery of another large village that three centuries ago may have been home to between 200 or 300 people. "Shuyak Island has always sort of been a place where I think it seems like there were fewer people up there," said Alutiiq Museum archaeology curator Patrick Saltonstall. "But finding that, you know what your preconceptions are and what you actually find often don't match." Although apparently once home to a seemingly bustling population, no Native Alaska communities survived past the late 1700s. To read about excavations near Yup'ik village in southwestern Alaska, go to "Cultural Revival."

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Archaeologists with the Alutiiq Museum dig into layers on layers site at Karluk Lake called site 309, which revealed a 'super structure'. This is separate from what was surveyed on Shuyak Island.

There are early Americans, but there are no native Americans.

This is no surprise. I have spent time on remote parts of Kodiak and Afognak Islands. That area is so rich with sea and terrestrial life that it would easily support human habitation. A lot of the local fishermen spend weather days digging on shore for artifacts (even though the white ones are not supposed to). It really is an amazing place.

Well technically, that’s correct. The theory was that we all came out of Africa, so that makes me an African-American. ;~))

Those were not “native Americans.”

Those were colonizers arrived from Africa via Asia.

The first people to settle that town were Vikings in longships, before the illegal aliens showed up.

Interesting, I have come across several Native America village sites within a few miles of my house, an archeologist told me that they were at least 500 years old.
