Ancient humans were building large wooden structures -- possibly houses -- almost half a million years ago. The discovery, the earliest evidence of wooden construction, suggests that some ancient communities were far less nomadic than we have assumed...
One of the first artefacts they found was a wooden tool, probably a digging stick. "The number of sites where wood is preserved is small," says researcher Geoff Duller at Aberystwyth University, UK...
...a 1.4-metre-long log overlying an even larger log that was too big to fully excavate during their month-long project. They saw that the overlying log had been worked with tools to fashion a deep notch midway along its length. This allowed it to interlock with the underlying log at a 75-degree angle, creating a relatively sturdy joint. The researchers speculate that the two interlocking logs were once part of a larger wooden structure...
Duller then dated the artefacts using a technique called post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence. This involves measuring the time since the mineral grains in the sand that surrounded the wood were last exposed to light prior to their burial. The mineral grains -- and the artefacts they surround -- were buried about 476,000 years ago... The engineers therefore belonged to an earlier human species, possibly Homo heidelbergensis...
...researchers have discovered 300,000-year-old wooden spears at a site in Germany, possibly made by H. ...
The engineers at Kalambo Falls needed to produce sharp-edged stone tools from rocks, recognise they could use those tools to cut through wood and then work in groups to transport and modify that wood to produce a large structure...
...says Barham... "We might need to rethink our labelling of the Stone Age," he says. "Maybe it was more of a wood age."

And what else is made of wood?
(puzzled serfs) A witch!
That is correct.
Burrrrrn her!
“post-infrared infrared stimulated luminescence”
mmm...what? C14 works only on post-flood specimens so they’ve cooked up something new.
protest too much?
Yep when the found the engraved symbols ACME HOMES on the wood.
That sometimes depends upon which side of the decimal point those 14 digits reside.
If you believe in gradual-ism. Catastrophe-ism is more believable.
Its based on assumptions surrounding the composition of chemicals in ancient specimens. All to prove a point.
Oh... You are talking about the Deluge then? Of course, even factual geology supports that there was a Deluge that hit many parts of the world simultaneously. Ancient written and oral tradition from all around the world supports there was a Deluge. But it was not on Ussher’s impossible Young Earth timeline like many propose.
No, it’s based on careful measurements and calculations.
I think C14 can date back about 50,000 years.
I have a theory about why such a building might be possible. We note that every 100k or slightly longer period of years, the world glides into a long chilling phase, but finally warms up for about 20k years. This cycle has been going on for around a million years. I believe during those warm periods there is a flourishing of civilization and then when the next long cold period starts the advances are mostly lost as many people die , and living gets really hard, until the next warmup such as we are in now.
I hope more scientists are encouraged to dig past the layers recognized by their peers as the bottom layer of a specific cultural period, such as they did when it was declared that there was no North American people before the Clovis period. Now they are digging deeper and discovering, Gee there really were earlier people. I also hope more searching will be done in the areas no under water that were exposed for living purposes during the long cold periods when the seas were as much as 400 feet lower than they are now.
