Russian economy meltdown as potato prices soar 167% as 'recession' warning sent

Vladimir Putin has been warned that Russia is facing an economic crisis as potato prices shoot up and fail to meet high demand. Prices of potatoes have skyrocketed by a staggering 167% over the last year, marking the most significant increase among foodstuffs. The Russian President admitted in May: "It turns out that we don't have enough potatoes. I spoke with [President of Belarus] Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko. He said, 'We've already sold everything to Russia'."

The soaring cost of this staple is attributed to poor harvests reducing supplies. Compounding this, households are turning to the typically affordable food option as their incomes shrink. Andrey Sizov, an expert on Russian commodities, said butter, eggs, and meat have also seen prices surge due to shortages.

He told The Telegraph: "My speculation is that supply went down, and actually demand went down a little bit.

"Potatoes are not an expensive food. In the previous two years, it was first of all poor Russians who were making more money. So they could consume something else - less potatoes, more meat and butter, for example."

With food prices on the rise and labour shortages persisting, inflation remains stubbornly high, causing significant fissures in the economy.

Economy minister Maxim Reshetnikov recently warned: "We're basically already on the brink of falling into a recession."

Putin needs to STOP killing off young Russian men by stopping the war - AND we might have some extra illegals for him to 'pick the crops'...

Potatoes take about 80 to 100 days to grow.

Harvesting is usually in August & September.

Other crops grow faster.

Russia has lots of land for crops.

“Its like its 2023 all over again? Another economic collapse for Russia?”

We’ll keep hearing the same until we finally exhaust the last 25% of what was a decent inventory of Patriot Interceptors. Then it’s on to the end game, which is NEVER recognizing the obvious, which is that Ukraine is no more. Yet another ‘great achievement’ of the Neocons.

“Ukraine is the fifth largest producer of potatoes in the world. Annually, the country produces approximately 20 million tonnes, similar to the U.S. Most of that, however, is grown in small-scale, backyard plots for domestic consumption, explained Gordiichuk, who is one of just 20 seed potato producers in the country. Only about 55,000 hectares are under commercial production.

“Ukraine’s main export market was Russia, said Gordiichuk, but that market closed in 2014 when aggression first began. In fact, today, Ukraine doesn’t export any potatoes. The European Union has been closed to the country since 2002 due to three quarantine diseases.”

Russian customer: "Give me two kilos of potatoes!"

Russian clerk: "You fool! This is the 'No turnips!'-counter. Over there is the 'No potatoes!'-counter."

Yeah, it really is a shame that we can't, like, make more!

Agree, at 550 Interceptors per year, maybe going to 650 per year (if China sells us the piece parts), that is essentially the case. Not to mention how depleted all our allies are, at this point.

...and for what - dragging out the Russian victory in Ukraine by a year or two?

I imagine the issue is personnel and fertilizer.

The fertilizer issues in the US have resulted in less than optimum crops. It’s noticeable in the produce section. Stuff is just smaller than it used to be.

Because of the lack of fertilizer and Ukrainian wheat crops, we should see some food issues in Africa later this year.

This is not new. I take most of what seems “hyperbolic” with a large gran of salt. But long term disruption caused by the war is inevitable. But Russians tend to be stubborn to a fault. Oh well.
