A tired canard is surfacing again in the era of wokery: “Estimates suggest that only about a third of the colonial population actively supported independence.”
This misconception originates from misreading an 1815 letter written by John Adams. Adams referenced Americans’ attitudes toward the French, not the American Revolution. English tyrannies weren’t welcome here by 1776.
Straightforward facts tell the story, beginning with the Revolution’s impetus, the Stamp Act, effective Nov. 1, 1765, long before Boston’s December 1773 Tea Party.
It was indeed a relatively modest tax.
What enraged colonists was its purpose; namely, subsidizing British continental wars that had stretched crown finances. It wasn't unlike today’s Ukraine conflict.
Not much has changed since: American populists opposed both wars and lacked any say in them (taxation without representation). It was not the tax rate but its genesis that inflamed Americans.
The 13,000-word Stamp Act collected only £27 of revenue, equivalent to roughly $8,300 today.
Parliament hastily repealed it the following March.
But the damage was done.
As our House Speaker emerita once advised, Americans needed to read the bill to learn its contents. They did, and weren’t happy. Royal tax agents' lives and properties were threatened by freedom-loving colonists. Many were hung or burnt in effigy. Tar and feathers (or worse) awaited anyone enforcing it, so it wasn’t enforced.
Connecticut is the world’s oldest continuous democracy, self-ruled since 1639.
Unlike the other colonies, it held a separate royal charter and elected its governor. It was the only colony officially siding against the king when the Revolution began.
Connecticut hosted the Revolutionary army’s headquarters, overseen by Gov. Jonathan Trumbull, “Brother Jonathan” to George Washington.
The port of New London was the principal supply depot for Washington’s army and...

So what the hell are we supposed to do? Give it back?
War started over attemptedB4itish gun confiscation.
The problem was not the tax, the problem was not the war. The problem was that we were given no say. We were free British citizens and entitled to a voice in how our affairs were run. Just because we were outside the bounds of Great Britain proper did not mean all our rights had disappeared.
Good article.
You know, they tried to preserve slavery!
That was it!😊

Great point, the Brits for starters, are having a TOTAL REPLAY of that time, along with the rest of Europe, but thankfully not the US anymore (since we’re out of weapons).

Since I know for a fact that we have thousands of Bradleys and Abrams tanks in storage. Not to mention the hundreds of F16's in storage.
US Air Force to mothball dozens of A-10s, F-15s and F-16s in FY22 budget
The U.S. Air Force wants to send more than 200 aircraft to the boneyard with its fiscal 2022 budget request, freeing up $1.3 billion in savings that it can reinvest in cutting-edge technologies like its sixth-generation fighter and hypersonic weapons.

Trump, about a week ago.
Trump, about a week ago.
Could not find Trump statement that we(USA) is out of weapons.
In fact Trump stated, he was not aware of the weapon stoppage to Ukraine.
But during a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Mr. Trump said he doesn't know who ordered the pause in weapons shipments to Ukraine.

War had already started when the elites were still figuring out what to do and hoping that things could be resolved peacefully. Then the elites had to figure out whether to support the war and independence. Many didn’t and lost their homes and property.
The Congressional Congress had already been established sometime before. If you were in it, you were probably a member of the elite and probably likely to join the revolution. Other members of the elites opposed it.
“Could not find Trump statement that we(USA) is out of weapons.”
But 2 weeks ago he did say that Patriots are very hard to get...so maybe Trump will give them some other weapons.
As far as I’m concerned, if Trump isn’t able to give Ukraine enough weapons to stop Russia, then I’ll know that we’ve been cleaned out.
“But 2 weeks ago he did say that Patriots are very hard to get...so maybe Trump will give them some other weapons.”
We’ll see if Russian jets and helicopters are operating over Ukraine. If so, then we have our answer on Patriots. (so far, they’ve only operated on the fringes)
Amen
You have information to refute the Pentagon?
I don’t think so.
So?
A majority of the Russian population did not support the Bolsheviks. You don't even have to have the numbers on your side as long as you have the organization and superior leadership.
