NEW YORK (AP) — State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein has won the Democratic primary for a New York City Council seat in lower Manhattan, thwarting former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner’s long-shot attempt to return to the political stage.
Voting concluded June 24, but the winner wasn’t established until Tuesday when ranked choice voting results were released. Epstein now moves to the city’s general election in the fall.
Weiner had entered the race in the hopes of restarting his political career after it was derailed by sexting scandals. He was eventually sent to prison for sending sexually explicit messages to a 15-year-old girl. Weiner received fewer than 3,000 votes, finishing far behind Epstein and some other candidates.
While Weiner’s candidacy brought a spotlight to the primary, Epstein also captured some unexpected attention.
Late last year, a “Saturday Night Live” sketch spoofed his name’s similarity to sex offenders Harvey Weinstein and Jeffery Epstein, with comedian John Mulaney playing the part of a candidate struggling to make clear to voters that he was not, in fact, one of the notorious sex criminals.

I repeat, what is Anthony Weiner’s real name? Anyone with any sense would have changed a last name like that before beginning a career in politics.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Queens College, a master’s degree in botany from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, a master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a PhD in nutritional ethnomedicine from the University of California.
When he was graduating from high school he went to a government office and said his father came to the US without a nickel and his family is too poor to afford college for him so he hopes to get the government aid and scholarship available. The man there literally laughed in his face: “What’s the matter with you? You aren’t black. Our aid is just for blacks.”
That’s what I was told in the early 70s ... And was laughed at also. I ended up paying for every credit out of my own pocket.
Jeffrey Epstein could have beaten Andrew Weiner.
I’d say Weiner has rather overstayed his welcome already. I don’t think NYC needs him back in politics.
