NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Dozens of Amtrak passengers endured hours of extreme heat aboard a stalled train in Nassau County on Sunday, with no electricity or air conditioning, and temperatures reportedly soaring to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Several people were reportedly treated for heat-related issues, and at least some were hospitalized, according to passengers.
Chris Brockett, who was on board the Floridian Train No. 41, spoke to Action News Jax and described increasingly dangerous conditions inside the train.
“The train is extremely hot. There is no power, and none of the toilets work. It’s becoming very uncomfortable inside—it’s probably 95-plus degrees,” he said. “The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office did a wellness check on everyone. I asked, ‘Can we get off?’ and they said, ‘You can get off, but you won’t be allowed back on—it’s your choice.’ We said, ‘Get us off.’”

Oh the police told the passengers they could get off.....but if they got off they couldn’t get back on......that’s jacked up if you ask me.
Agreed.....and in general, these days, people can be real inconsiderate obnoxious idiots.
The government should get out of the business of running trains and let the railroads handle it.
Yes, but that’s pretty much the same thing as saying “you can’t get off because there will be serious consequences if you do.”
“Other countries will always have superior rail service because their passenger lines have rail dedicated to them exclusively......and are mostly privately run and managed.”
“I do believe that if rail-travel was an option, people would choose rail...”
“We should do much more to encourage private passenger rail investment.”
Other countries have less distances to travel, and they also have local transportation (streetcars and underground) services to get you anywhere you want to go. The new(ish) Brightline service in Florida will be putting a station in at Cocoa, Fl eventually. This will work great for me when I need to travel to the airport for work and pleasure. If I wanted to go anywhere else in the Orlando area, I’d have to uber, taxi or bus into the location I need to be at (additional time and money). I once calculated the time for a trip that take me 45 minutes by car. Rail to MCO and other transportation options from the airport made it a 3-hour trip...one way. I’ll take the car any day for that.
There used to be trains that you could take your car with you.
Didn’t they give out free Vodka airline bottles?
I don’t understand why people just stayed in the train suffering. If that’s me, I’m getting off and taking an Uber to the nearest hotel or airport.
We were on that train (41) a week ago Toledo, OH to Jacksonville, FL. We took Floridian (40) home on Saturday. Sunday, around Richmond our dining car overheated and lost refrigeration, so no dinner service. We had a limited breakfast this morning in Cleveland before we got off in Toledo. I must say, I never slept better than on Amtrak, and the Amtrak employees were great.
You load car in Lorton, VA and Amtrak sends it to somewhere around Orlando, FL.
Amtrak - America’s version of Aeroflot.
A couple more comments.
If the train could have gotten to Jacksonville, FL, everyone could wait in the station which is kept so cold we had to take periodic walks outside to warm up. That is one cold station.
I found the outside of the train could have used a bath, because it was nearly impossible to take any pictures out the windows.
I had a buddy who said I needed to try the trains in Europe or Canada to see what real on-time rail service was. From above post, it is what I suspected - dedicated rails. We spent a lot of time on sidings and were nearly 3 hours late arriving on both the 40 and 41 trains. We took Amtrak from Toledo, OH to Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA round trip last year, and the ride/service/employees were first rate (4 hours late both ways due to freight trains mostly).
95 degrees?
Poor, sweet babies! Welcome to the South, cry baby! ;-)
On some occasions it is 95 overnight!
I'm guessing they were afraid that someone who didn't pay might get on.
Better to let the paying customers suffer than have someone get a free ride.
In a train that’s turned off, with no AC, no air circulation at all, 95 degrees boils up over 120 PDQ.
I wish it was only 95 degrees here.
Just like Italy under Mussolini.
bttt
Bernie Sanders remarked: Waiting for long times (and in long lines), is good.
“I wish it was only 95 degrees here.”
I don’t know where “here” is but where this train shut down is not just 95°.....it’s 90% humidity......and unless you’ve experienced both of those together it’s hard to understand.
Trust me, that kind of heat will suck the energy right outta you in a hurry.....which is why some of these people ended up in the hospital.
