Passengers stranded for hours on hot Amtrak train, some hospitalized

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — Dozens of Amtrak passengers endured hours of extreme heat aboard a stalled train in Nassau County on Sunday, with no electricity or air conditioning, and temperatures reportedly soaring to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Several people were reportedly treated for heat-related issues, and at least some were hospitalized, according to passengers.

Chris Brockett, who was on board the Floridian Train No. 41, spoke to Action News Jax and described increasingly dangerous conditions inside the train.

“The train is extremely hot. There is no power, and none of the toilets work. It’s becoming very uncomfortable inside—it’s probably 95-plus degrees,” he said. “The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office did a wellness check on everyone. I asked, ‘Can we get off?’ and they said, ‘You can get off, but you won’t be allowed back on—it’s your choice.’ We said, ‘Get us off.’”

"The train had departed from Chicago and was bound for Miami before it came to a complete stop north of Hilliard."

“We were told it was an engineer who had been over his allotment of hours, and they’re going to be bringing in another engineer very quickly and will be back on the route in no time,” he said. “That never happened.”

I have had that happen with Amtrak and planes.

At an airport or a train stop, that is not normally a problem, outside of the added time.

Happened to me a year and a half ago. Boston, DC. Sat on the tracks in New Jersey for two hours.

The new AI trains will not have the problem of a human engineer going "over his allotment of hours". /sarc

They're actually pretending they didn't know the engineer was approaching their limit. Like we haven't run trains for more than a century.

Amtrak SUCKS. I took it ONCE thinking it would be fun after visiting family in Los Angeles and take it back home to Oregon while I was living there. It took 48 hours which would have been a 12 hour drive. The engine broke down several times. There were HOURS just waiting on spur lines for cargo trains to pass. The bathrooms ran out of water. There was no food left in the galley. And the final insult was the engine broke down AGAIN just across the Oregon border and we had to walk to the highway where shuttle busses took us the rest of the way.

Garbage organization.

Wondering how that’s different from how we travelled on the LIRR in the 70s. We could open the windows, but that was before we allowed them to treat us like we are all complete morons

Things happen. Problems arise.

However, it is inexcusable that passengers on a train couldn’t be allowed to temporarily disembark and reboard under those circumstances.

I’ve ridden Amtrak several times in years past from Florida to Alexandria. Not sure I’d do it again now. But, it was mostly a pleasant experience at the time.

Amtrak will always be crap for a number of reasons. Yes, everything the gubmint touches stinks. Also, amtrak leases their rail lines from freight lines that are abused daily by very heavy freight trains so when amtrak rides those rails they are rough as a cobblestone road.

Other countries will always have superior rail service because their passenger lines have rail dedicated to them exclusively......and are mostly privately run and managed.

I’ve seen a number of youtube videos singing the praises of amtrak with one woman claiming “its just like European train travel”......how she made that statement on video with a straight face is beyond me. SMH

Assuming it was going to stop in Jacksonville, the train station there is on the extreme north side of town, so the way I figure it, from where it stopped to the station couldn’t be another 10 miles of track.

Thinking about it, I suspect the “we need a new engineer” story is complete BS.

Blaine the Mono was a sentient monorail that went insane over the course of its long lifetime. He became suicidal and attempted to kill his passengers in his suicide, but was ultimately defeated.
Monorail!

Hilliard is where my wife and I are from.

It’s also where the huge FAA Control Center is.

Next time, fly.............

Air-travel has become a nightmare, but its still faster for anything over 1 hour.

I do believe that if rail-travel was an option, people would choose rail. For example, Amtrak's Acela is often sold-out for the Boston-NY-DC corridor for nearby bookings, and in strong demand periods, they boost prices to rival airfares. For such high-density corridors, it shows there is a large market.

We should do much more to encourage private passenger rail investment. Most of that would simply be ending government control nd involvement.

A week after my daughter and I came back home to Omaha from Chicago on Amtrak, a tree fell across the tracks about a mile short of the Omaha depot. The passengers had to wait 6-8 hours for an Amtrak crew to come out & clear the tracks.

America is car crazy and always has been.

We love our independence and ability to drive directly to the destination even if it means it’ll take longer.

I have seen youtube videos promoting luxury bus travel....I’m hearing that’s an up and coming mode of travel but the downside right now is departure and destination locations are limited.

Decades ago, I rode on Amtrak several times. I only had one incident — the air conditioning in the train car I was in broke down, and it became like a sauna in there. This motivated me to move into another car which had a normal temperature. I can’t imagine what it was like when the entire train became a sauna. They should have let those people get off. What were they thinking?

And, let’s face it: the power to choose who we rub elbows and share oxygen with for hours.
