Environmental groups file lawsuit to halt ‘Alligator Alcatraz' detention center

Environmental groups Friday filed a federal lawsuit seeking to halt construction and operation of a detention center for undocumented immigrants that has been dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” saying it threatens ecologically sensitive areas and species in the surrounding Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve.

The lawsuit, filed by the group Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity, alleges that federal and state agencies have violated laws that, in part, require evaluating potential environmental impacts before such a project can move forward.

“The hasty transformation of the site into a mass detention facility, which includes the installation of housing units, construction of sanitation and food services systems, industrial high-intensity lighting infrastructure, diesel power generators, substantial fill material altering the natural terrain, and provision of transportation logistics (including apparent planned use of the runway to receive and deport detainees) poses clear environmental impacts,” the lawsuit said. “The defendants, in their rush to build the center, have unlawfully bypassed the required environmental reviews. The direct and indirect harm to nearby wetlands, wildlife and air and water quality, and feasible alternatives to the action, must be considered under NEPA (a federal law known as the National Environmental Policy Act) before acting.”

The project has drawn national attention as Florida officials say they are trying to help President Donald Trump crack down on illegal immigration. DeSantis has brushed off arguments that the facility could harm the environment, saying Wednesday that opponents are “trying to use the Everglades as a pretext for the fact that they oppose immigration enforcement.”

“It isn’t like we are going to start doing permanent sewer and all the other things,” DeSantis said. “It’s all temporary. We’ll set it up and we’ll break it down. This isn’t our first rodeo. The impact will be zero.”

Miccosukee Indian Village?

Nope. About 8 acres with a borrow pit due south of the airport.
I inherited it from FReeper GladesGuru.

Are they afraid that the alligators will get lazy and fat with all the easy hunting they’ll have?

Or are they worried that all the drugs and medications that the illegals are full of will make the alligators dependent?

" . . .they will be getting due process."

And immediately after that they'll be getting on a plane home.

True.

If Trump said, the sun rises in the east, they would start talking about how the sun isn’t actually moving, but rather, the earth is turning on its axis every day. They would talk about how while it may appear the sun is rising and setting, that it’s really the rotation of the earth that causes it to appear that way.

And then they would lambash Trump, for not knowing this the allegedly simple concept.

EnviroNazis sue. Not surprising. Only this time, Trump’s EPA can give DeSantis a waiver. This frivolous lawsuit won’t hold up work long.

Meanwhile, this remote airport has recently been used for staging hurricane emergency action, so there is no real case here but you always expect the communist Left to act like the communist Left acts.

BTW, my partner in the estate and I are hoping to sell it.
It is zoned for an educational facility in addition to a residence.

F’ them. It’s filled with boa constrictors and pythons now days after people released their pet snakes into the wild. Snakes that aren’t indigenous to the glades anyway so they’re not saving any ‘environmental’ anything. Just an excuse to halt progress on anything America first. I hate leftist groups like these lying bastards.

Actually this is the second time in about a year that Descantis tried to use “short notice” to try to improperly use public lands. He got his ass handed to him on the first occasion and rightfully, too. I’ve walked the airport fence line before. It an area better know for the infamous Swamp-Ape, much more dangerous than some ole snake or gator. Of course a dum mass politician doesn’t know about the Swamp Ape!

No problem. Just make them exempt from the count. That battle should have started already to make it law.

ones their numbers are meaningless the fight to get rid of them should become easier.

“No problem. Just make them exempt from the count. “

I don’t think we can get that constitutional amendment passed before 2030.

I’m still trying to figure out how the founders didn’t include text to limit the count to citizens.

I guess they assumed we wouldn’t be dumb enough to allow 40 million plus illegals in to the country let alone let them stay.

There’s gotta be more of these places available. Federal lands in blue states just to push buttons.
