The Perverse Roots of Muslim Hatred for Dogs

If you’ve paid any attention to global headlines, you might have noticed something deeply unsettling: Muslims, as a general trend, often seem to harbor an unusual hostility toward dogs. While the rest of the world hails dogs as “man’s best friend,” in many Islamic societies, they’re treated as filth, vermin, or worse — literal devils.

I’ve written about this before (see links below), but in case you’re new to the topic, consider just a few recent developments from the Islamic world:

Dog Deaths, Abuse, and Massacres: A Global Trend

• May 2025, UK: A Muslim man running a dog rescue shelter called Save a Paw was arrested after the carcasses of 37 dogs were discovered on his property. His was a cruel scam: accepting dogs from desperate owners who could no longer care for them, charging a fee to rehome them, then simply letting them die.
• January 2025, Morocco: In preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco launched a horrific dog extermination campaign. Reports estimated some three million dogs would be culled from the streets. Slaughter squads were seen clubbing and shooting strays across urban areas.
• August 2024, Turkey: Journalist Uzay Bulut warned that a new government law legalizing the removal of stray dogs had effectively turned municipalities into killing machines. Dogs were poisoned, shot, even beheaded by private citizens and city workers alike. Some were even buried alive.
• November 2022, Hebron (Palestinian Territories): The city’s mayor publicly offered 20 shekels for every dog killed. Videos circulated of mobs chasing, beating, and killing dogs in the streets.
• July 2022, Iran: Authorities raided shelters and killed 1,700 dogs taken in by volunteers. One video showed a woman weeping over the lifeless body of a dog she had once

I refuse to even read this. I love people who love dogs. I have trouble dealing with my disgust of people who hate dogs. I really don’t want to hate anyone, but it’s really hard to control my feelings for those who don’t care about the furry needy. I try to accept their different position which they come to on their own life journey, but...

That’s an excellent point. To much of the world animals are viewed as prey to be killed and eaten, or predators to be feared. It’s only white Westerners who have a deep-seated fascination with and love of animals . . . and the natural world in general. But I do think “fur babies” imay be taking that love a bit too far. Also, Mohammed was said to be a cat-lover, which might help explain his hatred of dogs.

Dogs co-evolved with humans in a symbiotic relationship.

They were man's companion throughout the ice ages, helping in tracking game and hunting.

My theory is that muslims are not human, and thus they never have developed the relationship with man's best friend.

I understand that dogs are popular in Saudi Arabia but they are always kept indoors, usually secretly.

There’s only 3 kinds of dogs: pit bulls, chihuahuas and all other dogs. Pit bulls are bred far beyond their desirability as pets because they are used for dogfighting and attacking people. Chihuahuas just multiply. I am very much in favor of euthanizing pit bulls completely out of existence.

The way to get rid of stray dog is to adopt them.

There are not enough families to adopt all the stray and abandoned dogs. Some dogs have been ruined (e.g. some pit bulls) and are not adoptable.

The numbers of dogs put down in this country dwarfs the numbers in the article. We love dogs, but they ARE animals. Cruelty, of course, is NEVER acceptable.
