Car burglars fired at least 30 shots at a 27-year-old man who confronted them during a vehicle break-in...
If you discover a theft in progress, do not exit the house to confront an offender. Instead, fire your home defense weapon out a barely opened window while crouched down low. A rifle would work best in terms of accuracy, but a shotgun loaded with slugs would be as good. Handguns are an iffy proposition in these types of events.
If it's a catalytic converter thief, try for the lookout first....or the getaway driver. Those are the ones who might shoot back. The one with the sawzall can then be dispatched at your leisure. Note: a sawzall can be easily mistaken for a short barreled rifle.

Like rats from a sinking ship, they swim out to the collar counties.
My beloved DuPage County is sinking fast.
DuPage had a good plan, and it worked well for years. When the state and federal government DEMANDED minority housing in your town, make it geographically undesirable away from taxpaying citizens, swampland is good, an old junkyard is good...
Then came Uber; GAME OVER.
A nearby town gym was open until 11 on weekends, free to locals, $2 for non-residents; very popular, our kids went often.
Then the unwashed started arriving, and then they would dash in without paying, and they all looked alike.
Next, they strong-armed the high school girl who collected the two dollars. IIRC she had been selected for the job because of her pleasant smile.
...An armed carjacking!!!!!!
So much for gym night, and my kids enjoyed it.

I am not a lawyer, legal analyst, or officer of the court, but I am reasonably certain that shooting at somebody from cover without a threat to life or great bodily harm would be considered attempted murder in some jurisdictions. If you have a damn good lawyer, and a lot of money to pay in legal defenses, by all means...

The outer wall of a suburban or apartment building is concealment, not cover.
Would suck when those 30 rounds came right through that wall.
Slugs into the engine of the getaway vehicle maybe. But not people at a distance over 20 yards.
This was just all around bad advice.
But if you’re not afraid of repercussions, plinking at the tires on the getaway vehicle could be a helpful delaying tactic. And when the perps look for the source of gunfire, show them your green laser while waiting for the cops to show up.

Yep, you are right. They have made it illegal to protect private property outside your Castle. Some states you can’t even defend your Castle.
The victim was reported in good condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

I noticed the same when our city did away with vagrancy laws. Suddenly the big library was over run with bums and drunks piling in on the soft couches and chairs sleeping all day in air conditioned coolness. The library had to close for a few weeks due to bed bug infestation from the bums.
Local museums were free, but due to the same problem had to start charging entrance fees to keep the bums out.

Northwestern Memorial is a world class hospital, and sometimes they can work wonders.
Also this is Chicago and many locals use the “Gangsta side grip”. Thank you, Hollywood, this has saved more than a few coppers and taxpayers.
If his wounds looked complicated, he would have been taken to Stroger/Cook County Hospital. The BEST trauma unit in the area.
They train the military corpsmen/medics/surgeons on live patients.
A bit of symbiosis, and the interns might get some sleep on a hot summer night; some still not much.

A friend was taking his son and a vanload of kids to The Field Museum in Chicago, as he was about to pay, when a herd of locals walked right in, not stopping to pay.
He asked about this and was told the payment is a voluntary donation! Over $20 for kids, $30 for adults.
He then dropped a twenty on the counter and asked for a receipt and marched his group in!, saving about $200.00.
