Obama isn’t coming to rescue Democrats in desperate need of leadership: NY Times columnist
Fox News ^ | 6/13/25 | Marc Tamasco

Posted on 06/13/2025 5:45:14 PM PDT by Libloather

New York Times columnist Tressie McMillan Cottom said Friday that former President Barack Obama will not be coming to Democrats' collective rescue as the party struggles to find national leadership in the wake of their stinging defeat in 2024.

Cottom argued that Democrats desperate for Obama to save the party are "undignified" and weak, asserting that change will not come from above, but rather from "the streets."

"We must start asking how we can save ourselves. We are seeing the start of that in places like Los Angeles, San Antonio and Raleigh, N.C.," she wrote, referencing the anti-ICE protests occurring across the country. "Only direct, sustained protest will protect us."

The Times columnist claimed that President Donald Trump has led the country into "dangerous territory" by deploying the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles, suggesting the moment feels significant enough to warrant Obama’s intervention.

She noted that the social media murmurs and essays questioning Obama's whereabouts at such a pivotal moment speak to an accepted truth: "The Democratic Party lacks leadership" in the wake of Kamala Harris' 2024 defeat.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., offer "glimmers of a charismatic party head waiting in the wings," she wrote. While Obama may feel like a good option, she wrote, she gave his presidency a mixed review from a liberal perspective, saying he was a "product of his times."

‘ Obama is a figurehead’

How is that related to him being ‘cool’ with Trump?

‘ I think the analogy is that we are coming to the end of the reconstruction.’

Where was the analogy because I missed it?

Because Obama realizes that it's BS.

My observation is that he's not running the show.

He's great at reading the teleprompter.

Obama isn’t coming to the rescue because he knows it can’t be rescued. And especially not by him (the Divider in Chief).

Booker and Hakeem are getting a lot of face time recently. I think they are planning an Obama 2.0

Neither of them are in Obama’s league. I often refer to Hakeem as “Dime Store Obama”.

The Dems have no policy or leadership. They think it’s all about optics with the press. Let’s keep it that way.

It doesn’t take genius level IQ to see that the dems have walked so far out on the diving board that even 0bama cannot save them. Hell, 0bama is practically a right-winger compared to contemporary liberal thought. He’d destroy himself trying to ameliorate the current state of dem radicalism. He’d have utterly nothing to gain for the effort.

0bama is lazy. Why should he become exercised, not to mention damaged, over what would predictably turn into internecine warfare. He’s so much better off being part of a faded memory than to upset his cushy life on the Vineyard. The dems have made their choices and he ain’t it/them. At the risk of excess optimism, the dems are gonna have to lose 2-3 elections before they get their brains back. Meanwhile 0bama gets to play tribal elder and I imagine that suits him just fine.

2-term Obama gave us Trump.
1-term Biden gave us Trump.

They may need a new plan.

Obama isn’t running ‘the show’? Well, no kidding!

That gif you posted could just as easily be interpreted as:

Secretly, Trump is cool with Obama.

‘ He’s great at reading the teleprompter.’

What’s the obsession with teleprompters? All presidents have used them for decades, including Trump.

He's laid back. You'll probably enjoy having a pint of beer with him.

‘ 2-term Obama gave us Trump.

Two term Bush gave us Obama.

One term Trump gave us Biden.

‘They may need a new plan.’

You may need a logic refresher.

The point is that Obama didn't run the show. Now Trump is running the show.

Most Presidents are figureheads.

Obama is the one who led the Democrat Party to the mess they’re in. He’s not going to rescue them!

‘ The point is that Obama didn’t run the show. Now Trump is running the show.

And the use of a teleprompter determines whether or not they are ‘running the show’?

I made the analogy. In the democrat south in the three decades after the civil war a number of african americans achieved prominent elected office. then there was some kind of social turn and they didn’t get back into office in numbers again until after the 1960’s.

there has been a very hard social turn since obama entered office in 2008. He is now way out of position, even more so than George Bush the junior or bill clinton

The Democrats do not need new leadership.

They lost the 2024 election by just 230,000 votes, after nominating Kamala Harris, the worst Presidential candidate in my life time, against Donald Trump, the ONLY Republican who can win a national election.

‘ I made the analogy.’

Except, you didn’t. Maybe in your head, but not here.

‘ In the democrat south in the three decades after the civil war a number of african americans achieved prominent elected office. then there was some kind of social turn and they didn’t get back into office in numbers again until after the 1960’s.’

Wow. Whatever could have happened in those decades in the south? It’s a mystery that someone should study, or something.
