A court battle is brewing over Jimmy Buffett's $275 million estate.
The late singer's widow, Jane, and the co-trustee of the estate, Richard Mozenter, have filed lawsuits against one another.
Attorneys said the Buffett case offers important lessons for families planning wealth transfers.
A court battle over the late-singer Jimmy Buffett's $275 million estate has highlighted the growing litigation over the trillions of dollars in wealth being passed down to spouses and families, experts said.
Jimmy Buffett's widow, Jane Buffett, filed a petition last week in a Los Angeles court to remove her co-trustee, Richard Mozenter, from the marital trust created to support her after the singer's death in 2023. Jane Buffett, who married Jimmy in 1977, alleged that Mozenter has been "openly hostile and adversarial" toward her and has refused to give her details on the trust and its financials. She alleged Mozenter is collecting "excessive fees" of $1.7 million a year and that he's mismanaging the trust assets, projecting income of only $2 million, implying annual returns of less than 1%.
Mozenter has filed his own lawsuit in Palm Beach County, Florida, alleging that Jane has been "completely uncooperative" in his efforts to manage the trust. He said Jane has interfered in business decisions, refused to meet with Mozenter and breached her fiduciary duties by "acting in her own interest."
The case has put a spotlight on the estate plans and business empire left by Jimmy Buffett, the singer famous for hits like "Margaritaville," "Cheeseburger in Paradise" and other breezy, beach-vibe hits. Along with his song catalogue, Buffett left homes, cars, planes and a multimillion-dollar stake in his brand business.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
It appears Jimmy wanted his wife to basically get everything but put a blocker to stop her for blowing it all. But the blocker seems to be taking full advantage of their position.
This guy sounds like a SWINDLER!
He’s a lawyer so, par for the course.
I’ll side with her on this one.................
I thought he was worth more than that. Still a nice sized estate for a guy who had one top 10 song.
Acting in her own interest? You betcha!
I wouldn’t put an extra person to manage a trust unless my beneficiary was in some way disabled & unable to handle it.
Jimmy was a huge Democrat. It figures that he would create this monster after he was gone.
Apparently, Jimmy wanted to make sure Jane didn’t marry a swindler who wipe out everything so the kids would have something.
Do you know any ‘parrot heads’? I’ve known a couple and they’re like ‘dead head’ grateful dead fans. A little wacky. ๐๐
The nerve of her acting in her own interest!
Someone needs to open a buffet in Key West and call it “Jimmy’s Buffet”. How fast would the Buffett estate sue them?
[I thought he was worth more than that. Still a nice sized estate for a guy who had one top 10 song.]
I know right. Heโs lived off two shitty songs his whole life. Cheeseburger in Paradise. Yuk. And Margaritaville. Yuk. Then of course that spawned his restaurant business. Total lib dork but hey. He got his piece of the pie here.
I once escorted Jimmy Buffett out of a venue in Washington and he asked me to carry his cased guitar. We chatted for a couple of minutes while we walked. That was pretty cool.
I probably saw him in concert 10x. Met him in Hong Kong. He yelled at me for interrupting his dinner. Lol. Does that make me a parrot head? Loved his shows.
“”In every big transaction,” said Leech, “there is a magic moment during which a man has surrendered a treasure, and during which the man who is due to receive it has not yet done so. An alert lawyer will make that moment his own, possessing the treasure for a magic microsecond, taking a little of it, passing it on. If the man who is to receive the treasure is unused to wealth, has an inferiority complex and shapeless feelings of guilt, as most people do, the lawyer can often take as much as half the bundle, and still receive the recipient’s blubbering thanks.””

He did a pretty low key concert in Hong Kong. He wanted to sell his tequila at it. Then he was informed he couldn’t sell his tequila without a liquor license, and the venue he played didn’t have one. So he said fine just serve it for free. There was like a couple of hundred of us watching him and getting hammered on his tequila.
I agree...the lawyer sounds like a sleaze.
He sold 20 million albums, was one of the top touring acts from almost 40 years, sold a lot of merchandising and was a shrewd investor. He sold the carefree beach image but was by all accounts a workaholic.
LOL! Maybe. Saw him in new orleans many years ago. Good show. We even do Margaritaville and Tampico Trauma at our gigs.
Buffett did all the right things - except in understanding people, and their relationships.
And that’s always the hardest part
