Executives from Jack Daniel’s parent company, Brown-Forman Corp., warned that the business is seeing pressure from cannabis, weight-loss drugs and lackluster demand from Generation Z.
Brown-Forman CEO Lawson Whiting told analysts on an earnings call that the “same big three” is the reason that there has been lower demand for liquor.
“We’ve been saying that for 1.5 years now. And I know on the sell-side that the world seems to be a little bit split on the extent of the pressure that it’s putting on our category. We’d be naive if we didn’t say that there isn’t some pressure coming from those,” Whiting told analysts.
The economy is also playing a factor, with Whiting noting that consumers don’t have as much dispensable income and are prioritizing vacations and lodging.
They go to the grocery store, I think in some cases, spirits has fallen out of the basket a little bit.
And that isn’t obviously great,” Whiting said.
However, he said that spirits are still taking market share from beer and wine. He also noted that while premiumization isn’t the same as it was, “it’s been kind of stagnant a little bit,” which he said is mostly good news.
“I think the consumers – they haven’t traded down necessarily,” he said.

I like a good bourbon or scotch. Maybe this will lower the cost over time.
Oversaturated. Gen Z is not a big fan of breweries. So some of them are closing.
Agree with no pumpkin. Pumpkin belongs in pies, cookies, or bread. Not in my beer.
Too many IPAs on the market. Hops contain phyto-estrogens, so drinking a lot of IPAs turns you into a soy boy.
It’s a conspiracy!
Jack Daniel’s needs to get in bed with Deep State!
Another world-wide lockdown (FOR NO REASON!) would get liquor sales back up to 2020 levels.
*SMIRK* *HIC*
Well I know a guy who drinks more whiskey the more weed he smokes. Maybe he can be a consultant for Jack Daniel’s. The guys not good for much else.
Now me personally I wouldn’t call JD “premium”, call me a snob. It’s midshelf at best. Not a fan. Indeed not a fan of hard liquor much, except clear spirits like Vodka. Not even tequila. Most of it turns my stomach. Vodka and soda with a splash is alright, or a G&T.
The one advantage the spirit makers do have is the low carb and low cal aspect. One shot is more bang for the buck - no carbs and low calories and for some keto friendly foo. Better for weight loss if you have 3 shots than 3 beers or 3 glasses of wine. Drink a glass of water after each shot too. It’s even better if you have 12 shots because then you’ll toss up the dinner too. Negative calories!
I was surprised to see “weight loss drugs” as a factor.
I would think people concerned with weight would not drink at all or, when drinking, be more inclined to drink a spirit like Scotch.
Looked it up, and apparently, in a lot of people, the GLP1 meds make people disinclined to drink any alcohol.
Bourbon or Scotch is best mixed with 2-3 ice cubes....
Sales are down? I’m doing the best I can!
Looks like you really thought this through.

I’ve noticed the trend away from wine perhaps due to cost or perhaps the use of cannabis. Seems wherever I go, there are stacks of wine on sale.
Meanwhile, in a recent article in a wine mag, it was noted that the prices of wine in restaurants have gone to such an extreme, the lowest cost bottle on menus is approaching $50+. no wonder sales are dropping.
I don’t drink spirits. Interestingly, has anyone noticed the price of a 12 pack of simple soda these days? Unless there is a special sale, the standard price for Coke here seems about $8.
Yep.
Bowmore
two fingers over two cubes.
Jack Daniels is too expensive. Jim Beam serves the same purpose for 2/3rds of the cost.
Many, many reasons why alcohol, craft beer especially is seeing a serious downturn, Weed competition, Gen Z not drinkers (sit at home and stream) like Boomers, GenX or even Millennials, bona-fide health reasons and also many using at an excuse to mask they have no disposable cash, COVID funny money dried up, no extra funny money cash from house purchases and refinances, credit cards maxed out...basically the chickens are coming home to roost for the terrible economy we have which has been greatly accelerated over the last 4 years.
I remember reading somewhere that the GLP-1 diabetes/weight-loss drugs also suppress craving for alcohol.
I will personally confirm that.
AMEN
Kids dont drink anymore. I started drinking young, was an alcoholic by 16. I used a bike lock to lock the liquor cabinet when my kids we growing up and they thought it was hysterical.
Vaping is really big, but alcohol seems like something old people do, to them.
