Elon Musk Issues Social Security Warning Over Trump's Tax Bill
Newsweek ^ | 6/04/25 | James Bickerton, Shane Croucher

Elon Musk has warned "if the massive deficit spending continues," there will be no money for Social Security, health care or defense, as he continues opposition to President Donald Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill."

The tech billionaire and former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) made the comment about Trump's spending package on his Truth Social website in the early hours of June 4.

Newsweek contacted Musk for comment via the SpaceX and Tesla press offices outside of regular office hours on Wednesday.

Why It Matters

The House narrowly passed Trump's budget package on May 22 in a 215-214 vote, despite a number of Republicans rebelling. The bill is expected to be voted on by the Senate shortly, and several Republican Senators have already expressed deep reservations. The GOP has a 53-47 majority in the Senate, meaning a handful of GOP rebels could block the package.

Musk is an influential figure within the Republican Party and, until recently, was a close Trump ally, working to cut what the two men and DOGE regarded as wasted government spending.

What To Know

On Thursday morning on his X website, Musk shared a post saying: "We pay over $100 billion per month in interest on the national debt. $1.2 trillion per year. That is about 25% of all government revenue going to pay interest on the debt."

Most of your lawyer representatives are corrupt criminals and many of the elections were completly rigged. I never voted for 35 trillion in debt. Get real.

Spent most of my life in CA. My entire life I voted against nearly everything these criminals were peddling.

So feel free to blame yourself. I’m not in your club.

I heard that the BBB is cutting the tax breaks for EVs and there’s an annual registration fee of $250 for EVs and $100 for hybrid vehicles.

Let me educated you.

One of the few things I ever voted for while in CA was Prop 187 circa 1994. Look it up. It would have put a stop to tax paid services for illegals which the corrupt politicians supported. The people won big...Then a corrupt federal judge along with their co-conspirators running the state of CA burned our ballots and declared our election illegal.

Thanks to your corrupt representatives. the results of that epic intrusion can now be seen coast to coast. Your hero Reagan? He kicked off a conga line of amnesty to millions of illegal aliens. Spit*

If Elon did his job and cut 2 trillion as promised instead of 9 billion, perhaps he could be critical of things. He needs to hide at Tesla.

I tend to doubt it’s an intentional good cop/bad cop thing, but, regardless, it’s a good look for Trump, and for Elon too. They both have legit positions that people can relate to. Trump is being pragmatic and practicing the art of the possible. Elon is pissed at the out of control spending. And the fact that they’re at such open odds with each other shows that MAGA isn’t a borg cube like the Democrats.

cutting taxes on tips, overtime and some Social Security

These tax cuts expire at the end 2028. Then it's back to taxes as usual.

And, sadly, this new push to eliminate the debt ceiling will confirm that fallacious position.

Correction is CoS offering up a Balanced Budget Amendment, another to eliminate the Income Tax in favor of the FairTax model (HR25), and another that spells out a clear definition of citizenship.

The problem is they always force us to take two spoons full of salt with only a half spoon full of sugar. It is always going to be sour and never sweet until we say no to the salt altogether period.

What I see in all this is that no one cares about who is going to have to pay for it all. They are NEVER going to pay down the debt, even if we cut spending and raise taxes none of it will go towards paying down the debt. They will keep spending and push that off to our Great Great Grandchildren. So spending money is extremely easy when it is not you personally who has to pay it back.

“Who cares? I won’t be here to worry about it anyway.”

And, that is why we need a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution.

You are no9t paying attention to my posts.

Again I am FOR tax cuts.

I am against spending increases anywhere because our country is more broke than my BIL who already has filed bankruptcy. I had to bail him out from losing his house. Who will bail USA out when we declare default on national debt?

This bill must be modified, and I hope Senate will do it’s job.

Elon has a right to lobby for changes but let’s see what actually gets through the type of majorities that are in the house and the senate. Since political reality is a very large cut in spending bill would literally have 30-40 Republicans vote against it in the house alone.
