And how Trump shattered the Establishment’s manufactured consent.
There was a moment in the late spring of 2015 when I realized that the ground beneath our feet was shifting. During an appearance on Fox News, Charles Krauthammer was asked to predict the Republican and Democrat nominees for the 2016 election. He said rather confidently that the nominees would be “Jeb” Bush and Hillary Clinton. When asked to explain his reasoning, Dr. Krauthammer pointed out that Bush and Clinton had the money, the political infrastructure, and the backing of their respective party elites.
I found his predictions unsettling — partly because “Jeb” and Hillary represent dynastic houses whose mere mention sharply divides the American people and partly because their preordained anointments seem particularly distasteful in a nation that enjoys lecturing the rest of the world on “democracy.”
We were a decade and a half into “nation-building” projects in Afghanistan and Iraq and several decades into our grand mission of “making the world safe for democracy,” and voters were being told that they would have to choose between unlikable scions from two of America’s most despised politico-aristocratic families. Why? Because the moneyed elites had decided that a Bush or Clinton would again rule in the United States. That awful choice appeared indistinguishable from telling the people of Afghanistan or Iraq that they could vote for whomever they wanted to lead their nations — so long as that leader came from one of a handful of noble families preselected by Western intelligence agencies.
Making matters worse, it was well known how chummy the Bushes and Clintons are. President George Bush I reportedly thought of the credibly accused rapist Bill Clinton as another son. President Bush II still refers to Bill as his “brother” and Hillary as his “sister.”

I am so happy we did not get another Bush or Clinton. Bleah!
As I like to point out, the American Experiment is predicated on the idea that political leadership by heredity is a bad idea. The Founders left Europe and wrote the Constitution they did largely because it was such a bad idea.
Here in the modern age, we seem to be wanting to return to this lousy system, with modern twists. I blame mass media.
As I like to say, no more Bushes. No more Clintons. No more Carters. No more Nunns. On down the line.
Other than the thievery Hillary would have done, there would have been little difference between the two. Both would have governed as the Deep State and Elite required.
The Uniparty is largely a result of the Bush-Clinton symbiosis.
In 2016 I was initially for Scott Walker. When he flamed out after the first debate and NR came out with the issue dedicated to kill off Trump, I was all in on Trump. They were going to pick another Romney.
In 2015, the rumors of Trump running for President overwhelmed all forms of information distribution, including water coolers. On TV and radio, the Jeb and Hillary ads were running during and in between shows that were obsessed with Trump running for President. With newspapers, people were only interested in the stories about Trump. Full page ads by Jeb and Hillary were used for bird cage liners. All of this was happening before Trump even announced he was running. By then, money couldn’t beat him.
Early in the 2016 primary season I had lunch with John Fund, former editor of the Wall Street Journal. I started a sentence with “But if Trump were to be the nominee then ...” and he cut me off with: “Trump will not be the nominee.” So I said “Syre, but if he did win the primary then ...” and he cut me off the sane way. I tried the third time to make my point and he literally banged the table:
“Look at me. TRUMP. WILL. NOT. BE. THE. NOMINEE. “
I gave up.
Puh-leeze.
Those two running would have been nothing but for show. They would ‘debate’ and spar, pretending to hate each other, they would have had videotaped ‘rallies’ and then they would break bread with each other and get sloshed, laughing at how stupid we peasants are. I have do doubt they both would have spent 95% of their time not even campaigning and would have just spent their campaign funds on high cost resorts, hotels, private planes and food and drink galore. Oh, and on hookers for Bill.
This is how far back those two families go:

Great article! I am so glad that Trump stepped up and I can proudly say I voted for him three times!
Oh the uniparty was around long before Bush/Clinton.
Basically Woodrow Wilson if I had to pick a time.
Certainly WWI
*sure
*same
When the lady editor started to swoon over Romney, I canceled my NR subscription.
The Deep State long predates Bush-Clinton. They are a nasty result, but it has been rolling since Wilson and especially Roosevelt.
I seem to recall that someone Trumped both Jeb and Hillary that electi9n season. Anyone remember who Trumped them?
“Stay out da Bushes” (Jesse Hi-Jackson).
I remember the ABJECT FEAR here that we’d be stuck with Jeb. Given his money advantage it seemed very possible. The only problem was that the Republican base gets to vote and while they were not initially sure about Trump, they were damn-sure about Jeb and so the rest was history.
I was skeptical of Trump at first. Wrongo.
Also thought Reagan would start WW3.
The world was safer when he left.
It’s even good that ‘41 was in charge and the Soviet Union broke up with all their loose nukes.
The history of political predictions has a horrible accuracy rate. Even from those who allegedly are “experts” on politics. If you believed the experts, we’d have a President Rudy Giuliani, a President Rick Perry, a President Scott Walker in addition to a President Jeb Bush. And Hillary has been the experts’ favorite on the Dem side for 20 years when there has been an open primary.
