Type II Diabetes

Posted on 05/24/2025 1:24:15 PM PDT by Mean Daddy

My doctor just prescribe Metformin for Type II diabetes. He says I'm borderline but I'm hoping to control it via diet vs. medicine.

My question is what have other Freepers with T II done? How many carbs do you limit yourself too each day? Recipes? What other things should I be thinking about? I walk 1.5 to 5 miles per day and I'm pretty sure I can control it via diet as I have a sweet tooth.

I've done the Aikens diet in the past and had luck, is that a route others have taken? My recollection was to get to 0 carbs and then add some until you found your sweet spot for carbs or have you taken a different approach?

I started fasting where I don’t eat until noon but only after stopping eating at 8-9:00 pm. The problem I know is crap diet and not properly fasting so I’m interested in checking this out. Thank you.

My wife and I both were told we were pre diabetic. We changed our diet, gave up seed oils, ultra processed foods, and would eat a head of cabbage instead of a bag of chips. My gal who did my pedicure sees a very much improvement in fungus on the toenails, many of the spots on my skin cleared up, our sugar levels are way down, no more brain fog.. and I wake up happy. It feels GOOD to feel energy. We became farmers here in the house of BACTERIA that we feed the little animals in our GUT, that produce most of our hormones and 90% of our auto immunity. We stopped going to doctors, and are doing homeopathic treaments. here in Mexico she calls herself a LICENCIADO. We gave up a lot of topical oils, and are more careful about drinking mineral water and getting proper sleep. You know if people just TRIED to eat healthy we could save Medicare BILLIONS. But it is easier for the doctor to prescribe like at Urgent Care in Laredo, after we tested positive to COIVD they prescribed 7 meds. I only took the antibiotic for the infection in my lung. Turns out they were giving me pills for allergies, as well as surpress the symptoms of Covid which was a slight loss of smell. They wanted to give me a BREATHING MACHINE since it was FREE and Medicare would pay for it. I LOVE the message of Dave Ramsey, those people in Washington D.C need to learn how to cut back on spending.. like we are all doing... My wife at the table started thinking of all the ways we are saving money today...by eating to live healthy. God Bless Donald Trump and God Bless Bobby Kennedy Jr. Amen

Time to see an endocrinologist and stop relying in internet advice. Each of us diabetics is different and relying on metformin is a possible start but even that well touted drug has drawbacks after long use.

Those with type 2 diabetes are CURING their diabetes with a low to zero carb diet, not causing it. We require “essential” amino acids (proteins) that cannot be created in the body, but must come from food sources. We require “essential” fatty acids for the same - must come from food. We do not require ANY carbohydrates.

Do the Fast(ing) Mimicking Diet:

https://valterlongo.com/diabetes-obesity/

It is available at Prolonlife.com.

Increase your soluble fiber to 30-40 grams a day eating various sources, but consider Hero bread or Sola Bread sources. Resistant starch is the better way to go.

Stop eating sugars, starches, and pastas.

You can still bring your beta cells back into a viable life. They don't initially die off, but they do become inactive.

The fast mimicking diet done just five days a month for 3-6+ months may give you incredible health returns. If you also change your eating habits, going lower carb, you may fix it all. Finally, increasing physical activity will be the carb-free icing on the cake.

I refuse insulin injections. I’ve been on Metformin for what seems like forever but my numbers on blood tests were still bad. The doctor kept pushing me to try Rybelsus and I finally did, adding that to the Metformin. Lost 40 lbs, no side effects and my numbers became miraculously normal. For me, it’s the miracle drug you always read about.

Husband, also type II, took Metformin and insulin but got scared of his insulin giving him low sugar events. No side effects from Metformin for either of us but no amazing results either. So husband has JUST started the 7 mg Rybelsus, in addition, and no side effects for him but not enough time on it to learn if it’s going to be his miracle drug, too.

Look up carnivore and keto on YouTube. There’s a ton, and I mean a ton of channels on it. You are just starting out with a pill. It is reversible for you if you have the stones to start eating low carb, no sugar, foods and drinks now. I’m 25 years late. Still trying to halt the damage done by depending on big pharma instead of diet and exercise.

Good luck! And I mean that👍

Wife is T2

We try to keep it under control with limiting simple carbs (bread, pasta, rice, etc) in favor of complex carbs (veggies, some fruit) and have good protein.

Fenugreek: A 3000-Year-Old Cure for Modern Diabetes

🌿 Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is an ancient herb that has been a staple in culinary and medicinal practices for thousands of years. Research has shown that fenugreek consumption significantly reduces fasting blood glucose and HbA1c levels. Additionally, it improves insulin sensitivity and lowers blood glucose levels in both overweight and non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients (MDPI) (MDPI).

✨ Cinnamon also shines in managing blood sugar. It enhances insulin sensitivity and regulates blood sugar by mimicking insulin Studies confirm that cinnamon can reduce fasting blood sugar levels and improve long-term blood glucose markers (MDPI)
(MDPI).

How to Use:
1️⃣ Ingredients: 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds and half an inch of Ceylon cinnamon stick.
2️⃣ Preparation: Soak both in regular water overnight.
3️⃣ Usage: Drink the mixture on an empty stomach every morning.
4️⃣ Duration: Follow this routine for 3 months while maintaining a balanced, low-GI diet.

🚫 Who Should Avoid:
🔹 Pregnant or breastfeeding women
🔹Individuals with allergies to fenugreek or cinnamon
🔹People on blood-thinning medications (consult your doctor first)

I love fasting. It really works. Do your research.
The best thing about fasting is you do not have to
do anything and you don’t have to buy anything.

I definitely endorse intermittent fasting. Not every day, but at least twice a week.
