May 22 (UPI) -- A New York park is celebrating one of the city's most iconic animals next month with Pigeon Fest, a day-long event featuring art exhibitions, science demonstrations and the city's first Pigeon Impersonation Pageant.
The High Line, an elevated park on the West Side of Manhattan, announced Pigeon Fest will be held from noon to 8 p.m. June 14, coinciding with National Pigeon Appreciation Day.

Some 30 years ago I was paralell parking a vehicle, in a downtown area, and I heard a thump, got out after parking and looked around, it was a smashed pigeon, they are dumb birds.
Flame away.

Way back when, the WaPo started a campaign to select a state bird for DC. They asked the public for recommendations. It quickly got out of hand as Turkey, Buzzard and Pigeon took the lead and never looked back.
The campaign was allowed to die with dignity.

If this so-called Pigeon Fest doesn't include a driven hunt with unlimited 20ga shotshells, then I ain't goin'.

Dumb and spread disease such as Histoplasmosis... Kept pigeons as a kid and have the scars on my lungs to prove it.

“SQUAB”
Indeed, aka Rock Dove
When you hear the term dovecoat (an Avery for table fare), Don’t think of the tiny little doves that you see in your yard occasionally or at the bird bath. we’re talking Rock Dove , which is a bigger variety, and quite taste. My favorite bird though, is the Ptarmigin, but it’s a grouse.

To be followed by Rat Fest and Cockroach Fest...

I wouldn't want to eat a "rock dove" from any urban area, since it has been eating trash all of its life. I suppose if you got those that lived on farms and ate grains from feed lots they would be OK. Plus eating pigeons is a bit of a turnoff since they seem less like a wild bird and more like the feathered equivalent of a city rat.
On the other hand, mourning doves are certainly good eating (for what little meat you can get from one), but they spend their lives feeding on seeds of wild or crop plants rather than on garbage.

Here in our town we used to have large flocks of pigeons about the place.
They seem to all have been chased off or disappeared..........

If you can hit a startled mourning dove, you’re a competent shotgunner
Bubba an’ me shot a dozen mallards roostin’ in the trees.
