Amazing Benefits from Half a Tablespoon of Olive Oil

The evidence keeps accumulating that olive oil can help people lose weight and reduce the risk of heart disease and dementia. Getting enough?

We have been writing about the health benefits of olive oil for decades, although at one time doctors thought it was too high in saturated fat to be healthy. Data from long-running cohort studies continues to bolster our enthusiasm. They suggest that as little as half a tablespoon of olive oil might reduce mortality from heart disease, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and respiratory illness. People who consume olive oil are also less likely to die from dementia. A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, May, 2025 suggests that a long-term increase in olive oil consumption was associated with weight loss.

Losing Weight While Consuming Olive Oil? For decades, the nutrition establishment discouraged consumption of fat of any kind. Cardiologists were especially opposed to fat on the grounds that it would clog our arteries. Margarine with hydrogenated vegetable oil was recommended instead.

As a result of the anti-fat crusade, there was a proliferation of low-fat and no-fat foods. There was low fat/no-fat yogurt, fat-free salad dressings, cookies and cakes. There were even low-fat chips. You could buy SnackWell’s Devil’s Food Cookie Cakes that were “FAT FREE.” There were Hostess Lights Low Fat Twinkies, Fat Free HALF AND HALF from Land O Lakes and fat free Pringles with 100% SATISFACTION, 0% GUILT.

A lot of health professionals discouraged the use of olive oil because it contains roughly 14% saturated fat. In retrospect, a lot of “experts” were wrong about low fat/no fat and olive oil.

I eat olive oil more often than I cook with it. I prefer avocado oil or natural butter for cooking, depending on what it’s for.
I had homemade caprese salad just last night.

“Don’t eat the Olive oil. Cook with it.”

Low heat only. Olive oil has a low smoke point. If you reach the smoke point it starts to destabilize and you lose the nutritional benefits. For high temperature frying I use canola. Everything else is olive oil.

Is this how the Mediterranean diet works besides being so high in carbs and lectins ? I only use Extra Virgin it on popcorn but it probably does come out to about a teaspoon a day.

Half a tablespoon is about what people get in a serving of good home-made salad dressing.

(Store bought dressings usually have seed oils.)

I feel your pain. I dip my breakfast biscuits in olive oil (I prefer it over butter). And like you, I haven’t lost any weight.

It’s probably due to Climate Change. I’m not sure just how, but that’s my guess.

🤔

Well there is a diet, and a very specific exercise, that when combined with olive oil (or anything else for that matter) will practically guarantee some amount of weight loss.

That exercise is called Push Aways

Push yourself away from the table.

It works by making you feel full longer and theoretically eating less.

Olive oil is one of the things I seem to be using more. I dropped 40 lbs.in about 3 months just by eating better.

Lots more fish, a few salads, less Big Mac’s (Actually I rarely ate them.

I drink zero sugar pop now or Iced tea. Mostly Iced tea.

Field of Greens powder is a stalwart for me.

Weight is down. 6ft tall, 185 lbs. I guess I feel better and am doing well at keeping it steady.

It’s gonna get worse. My wife just found out she has Stage 1 breast cancer. Our already somewhat healthy diet just got real intentional.

They made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.

They eventually gave up their interest in the olive oil business and relocated to Nevada.
