A Florida man is recovering after being gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park this week.
It seems like this is a lesson that people have to learn once or twice a year, every year. For some reason, people think these are calm, docile animals that can be approached. The truth is that they weigh almost as much as a car and can run surprisingly fast. They’re also wild animals and are famously unpredictable in their behavior.
A full grown bison could easily kill a human being, if they wanted to.
The Daily Caller has details:
Bison Gores Tourist At Yellowstone National Park
A bison gored a 47-year-old Florida tourist Sunday at Yellowstone National Park after the man approached the beast.
The tourist was treated by emergency medical personnel after sustaining minor injuries, Yellowstone authorities said in a press release.
The incident is subject to an ongoing investigation, but it remains the first case of a bison attacking a person in 2025. There are two such cases in 2024, and one in 2023.
“Always stay 25 yards away from bison,” Yellowstone park authorities said in the press release. Authorities advised people maintain a similar distance for all large animals and a 100 yard distance from wolves and bears.
“Bison will defend their space when threatened and have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans,” the press release said.
People reacted on Twitter/X:
Maybe the park just needs bigger warning signs, reminding people that you should avoid wild animals with horns that weigh thousands of pounds.
Not enough, apparently.
My grandson said he wasn't bored anymore...lol. I have a decent video of that moment, not great, but it tells the story.
I’ve seen these stupid city slickers try and put their kids on the backs of wild bears to get a picture.
Photo shots. The ranch hands did the paintball shooting. The buffaloes didn’t connect the shots with the shooters. They barely reacted at all.
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a buff.
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no fluff.
Fuzzy Wuzzay wasn’t fuzzy, was he?
Nice cow, pretty cow (stroke stroke)
“Bob! I think that’s a bear.”
Reminds me of being stationed in Sicily where service members constantly get in accident. A few military decided to go across to the western part and got in an accident with another military personnel (didn’t know each other). Craziness!
I guess you could say he learned an inconvenient truth?
(I’ll show myself out).
They were amazing shots, we were only a few feet away but on the other side of the corral fence or a very sturdy barbwire fence which we could shoot over/through. And you are right about animal photography. Even flowers are tough if there is any breeze! Birds on the wing are a great get but difficult. Catching them as they approach a landing is often the best. She’s caught eagles and osprey carrying fish.
Well, to paraphrase Muhammad Ali, “If you even dream of petting me, you better wake up and apologize!” lol
😂😂
Sounds like he was rewarded with lots of breaks, cuts, contusions...
Impressive!
It is very hard to get a photo of a little bird flying, at least it is for me. I have never succeeded doing that. I think in every one of my decent bird shots the bird is always perched on a branch or twig, on the ground, on hanging out grasping the side of a tree.
I think if I ever win the lottery, I might buy a better camera and lens. Of course, I’d have to play the lottery first.
Getting to close to a bison is like voting for a Democrat.
“Ya gotta be tough, to be dumb!”
Play stupid games....
This guy was lucky he got off with minor injuries.
Hard to believe, but bison can even jump a fence.
Thanks for that info.
I got to feed a bison once from inside the husband’s truck. We visited a drive-through “safari” that sold you a bucket of feed. Many species of hooved animals there.
Drove through something similar in Missouri. A four legged ungulate of some sort, harmless looking, came up up to the passenger side, so small daughter rolled down her window and Offered it a treat.
It replied by presenting a purple tongue about a foot long, and the ladies shrieked, I only screamed.
We see the same tourist behavior here in Colorado. In a mountain town called Estes Park, we will often see tourists walk up to bull elk to take a selfie. Sometimes with small children in tow.
Yeah, good equipment is huge. Though wife takes most shots now with a Canon PowerShot SX70 HS. Has incredible zoom ability too. She got better sun eclipse shots with it than with her full frame camera with expensive lens. About $600 but you still need two batteries and 2 cards. She says best deal out there unless money is no issue.
Notice to nitwits: animals “in the wild” are typically “wild”.
