A Florida man is recovering after being gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park this week.
It seems like this is a lesson that people have to learn once or twice a year, every year. For some reason, people think these are calm, docile animals that can be approached. The truth is that they weigh almost as much as a car and can run surprisingly fast. They’re also wild animals and are famously unpredictable in their behavior.
A full grown bison could easily kill a human being, if they wanted to.
The Daily Caller has details:
Bison Gores Tourist At Yellowstone National Park
A bison gored a 47-year-old Florida tourist Sunday at Yellowstone National Park after the man approached the beast.
The tourist was treated by emergency medical personnel after sustaining minor injuries, Yellowstone authorities said in a press release.
The incident is subject to an ongoing investigation, but it remains the first case of a bison attacking a person in 2025. There are two such cases in 2024, and one in 2023.
“Always stay 25 yards away from bison,” Yellowstone park authorities said in the press release. Authorities advised people maintain a similar distance for all large animals and a 100 yard distance from wolves and bears.
“Bison will defend their space when threatened and have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal. They are unpredictable and can run three times faster than humans,” the press release said.
People reacted on Twitter/X:
Maybe the park just needs bigger warning signs, reminding people that you should avoid wild animals with horns that weigh thousands of pounds.
Stupidity is highly concentrated in that park.
I can hardly believe all the many stupid things people will do. Don’t people have any sense at all?
Less than half, I'd say.
Every year.
Scare stories.
Bison are tame and nice animals.
You can approach them and tell them to SIT.
Then give them a belly rub
“I once found myself in the middle of a semi-tamed heard of buffalo”
My wife is a retired photographer. We were invited by a rancher who has a herd of buffalo to do a photo shoot in NW Colorado. His words were, “Give them plenty of room. They don’t domesticate no matter how long we have them.” His large iron corral for giving them medicine was most impressive too, as were his herding dogs. We got great shots.
The bison and Gore are teaming up to take out Florida Man in order to make a statement about globull warming?
We had a neighbor who had a “pet bison”- had it for years- then one day for no apparent reason, the bison gored him in the gut- he survived for awhile, but got an infection later in the wound and died from it.
I used to caretake on a small bison ranch- there were 15 bison- there is no way you can tame those things! And they can move with astonishing speed! Had a few close calls. Learned 5o stay very near the fence if we had to go in to the pens for any reason.
I see a video on YouTube where a fella is raising them and takes his kid along to feed them- he is flirting with tragedy. You might get the odd animal every now and again that acts friendlier than the others, but I still would not trust them! They are too big, too powerful, and too fast to deal with if mistaken about the steady reliability of their personality
DARWIN!!! /s
Bigger warning signs won’t do anything but impede the area needed to egress from the pissed-off bison.
These people are stupid. Many of them think Yellowstone is some kind of wild-animal park, not a good one since there are no cups with treats handed out by coin machines.
You can’t fix stupid - but you sure can film the result and make bets on how high they’ll get tossed.
It’s the invincibility effect- folks don’t understand that yes, tragic things can happen to them. They feel invincible. Especially as teens and up into 30’s - then after so many narrow escapes, they come to realize that they have tempted fate enough. Well, most folks come to realize it. Then there are the evil knievils of the world who keep right on tempting fate. But they apparently don’t particularly care if they live or not, as long as their life is full throttle while they are alive.
Took me a great many years and many scars later to start taking life seriously. 🙃
Last words before goring... “Here kitty kitty”.
Lol! Without the sa4casm tag, someone might take you seriously 😆
We always add up the stupid things people do during the summer.
Now with selfies all the rage, we’ve got a ton of stupid incidences to choose from, some of “the players” are taken out of the gene pool.
We still talk about the idiot that stood over the blow hole in Hawaii, got blasted into the air, then was sucked back down through the blow hole by the pressurized wave - his body was found a couple of days later. He was celebrating his high school graduation. Plenty of warnings around - and the area was fenced off.
Bison are awesome to photograph! Such powerful creatures! Some really great photos are of bison taking dust baths with the sun behind them, and the dust illuminated by the sun agaisnt a dark background. And of course bison battles/sparring sessions. Elk, moose, bison, all awesome creatures to photograph
Lets see a photo of FL man .
I suspect FL man is invading Chinese , Indian , Paki , Muzzie, ……
A new Biden arrival or a Mike Lee Indian invader .
…it “they” wanted to? Is that the Bison’s preferred pronoun?
“ Lol! Without the sa4casm tag, someone might take you seriously 😆”
Well the same thing works on grizzly bears.
I spent my 17th summer working in Yellowstone as a waitress. We hitchiked a few times. Bears were our fear. Do not ever remember seeing a Bison.
