A new deadly drug called carfentanil is in Santa Clara County, medical experts say.
It's a synthetic opioid like fentanyl, but much stronger.
On Wednesday, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Michelle Jordan announced that the county's first overdose death due to carfentanil was reported last week.
"Carfentanil is 100 times more potent than fentanyl," Dr. Jordan said.
National Fentanyl Awareness Day highlights the dangers of the drug causing a crisis in San Francisco and killing thousands across the country.
Last week, a 39-year-old man was found dead with M30 pills, counterfeit pills made to look like prescription oxycodone.
"What I'm really worried about -- and the reason I want people to be made aware of this -- is because some of the pills that are sold off the street could be potentially laced with carfentanil," Dr. Jordan said.
Jordan said this recent death means the drug is out there, and fake pills look real.
When it comes to treatment, Cheryl Ho, the county's Behavioral Health Medical Director for substance use, said there's been a lot of focus on the treatment of opioid use disorder.
"We would like to be there, provide services, let you know what's offered," Ho said. "You know, you don't have to be perfect or gotten somewhere to get help. You can be just anywhere in your journey, and there is some sort of help available. And so I think really we've been working hard these past years to really orient our services more towards meeting people where they're at."
A Santa Rosa father who lost his son to an accidental fentanyl overdose is making it his "goal" to warn others about the dangers of the drug. The county's Opioid Overdose Prevention Project offers free naloxone - the overdose-reversing drug - by mail to anyone 18 or older.
Dr. Jordan said her office will sound the alarm on any drugs they see in the community.
"So this stack are all the postmortem toxicology reports of drug-related fatalities," she said, pointing to a large stack of papers on all the overdose deaths she's handled since 2019. "What does that say to me? It says to me that there are a lot of individuals that are dying from drug overdoses, but most importantly, there are a lot of families that are impacted by the drug crisis."
Carfentanil has already been reported on the East Coast and Midwest.
Let me guess: the Chicoms are closing in on what they will use to intentionally, willfully, with premeditation actually poison/murder us all.
It’s only legitimate use is as an elephant tranquilizer. Really.
If you buy cr-p from a stranger with likely drug gang connections, knowing the items you think you are buying are, in fact, illegal, and then you volunteer to take these things because you think it will be fun, well, you alone should own the consequences—including your own death.
Some will say if we just made it legal to get carfentanil, everything would be fine.
I say, yes, it will still be fine because you will still be dead, which is what you wanted.
You want to do illegal drugs, that is your choice.
If those drugs kill you so what?
If you are a druggie you aren’t that much use
to society.
Before you flame me, I did my best to save my Heroin addicted cousin, took her into my home, nourished her, but she went back to the streets.
That is where she wanted to be.
Why can’t they just let us have some good ol’ fashioned meth and cocaine and not this nasty deadly stuff?
This “ intrepid reporter “ doesn’t ask, or even speculate, about where this chemical weapon is manufactured.
Better than a neutron bomb….
CPH4?
The concentration levels for a lethal dosage for something that potent are getting there....
The intent is to kill us?
Killing the buyers of your product doesn’t make sense. Either people will wise up and stop buying it (unlikely) or the pool of buyers will shrink to nothing through deaths.
I recently lost a nephew to drugs. My brother is devastated. You can’t care for someone more than they care for themselves.
Wait until China starts putting that shit in advil, ozempic, ampicillin, and whatever else they are making for us.
Went to many, many concerts over the decades. I remember a Bread & Roses benefit at the Bezerkley Greek Theater. Bill Graham stopped the music, and announced that someone had put PCP in a pipe, and then passed it around. There were several people in ambulances. My drug of choice back then, and today, is still a strong Martini, with two olives.
There was Winterland in San Francisco. In efforts to stop people from entering without paying, they literally sealed all the exit doors. One time, and one time only, I went up to the top level seats. There was not much air, but all of the smoke from all of the different substances people were smoking collected up there. I quickly returned to my seat on the first level.
Lost a grandson here.
Why are none of the Pro-Death Penalty states look into using these drugs? We hear every single day about OD deaths from it, it looks to me like this particular drug would do WONDERS for expeditious room temperatures.
Great, just great. As if they needed something worse than fentanyl.
Time to go “Full Singapore” on dealers.
its made for elephants and other large animals
