Trump seeks to rechristen ‘Victory Day’ holidays in US

US President Donald Trump on May 1 expressed his intent to rename two US holidays to “Victory Day” in his latest attempt to alter the country’s nomenclature.

“I am hereby renaming May 8 as Victory Day for World War II and November 11 as Victory Day for World War I,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

-snip-

“Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8 as Victory Day, but we did more than any other country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II,” Mr Trump’s post said.

- snip-

“We won both wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything – That’s because we don’t have leaders any more, that know how to do so!” Mr Trump continued. “We are going to start celebrating our victories again!”

These re-namings are increasingly silly.

What's wrong with giving veterans a day?

And in what sense was November 11 a victory for the U.S?

World War One was a purely European affair. No evil dictators involved, just competing colonial empires. Had the U.S. not intervened, the war might have ended in stalemate. No Hitler, no WW2, no Soviet expansion or Cold War.

Trump thinks that WW1 is some kind of American victory? How Wilsonian of him.

America did defeat the enemy in WWI. Obviously it was not the war to end all wars as advertised.

I agree. It honors more specifically the sacrifices that veterans have made. I have no problem with having May 8 as "Victory Day."

I love to see June 6th a holiday. Turning point in the Pacific with battle of midway, in 1942 and D day 1944.

WWI wasn't a victory for anyone. It was an armistice, and it was prelude
and cause of the greatest disaster of the 20th Century. The world would
have been better if the US had stayed out of WWI.

Armistice Day should be a day of mourning.

battle of midway

Ditto that. 'AF' is low on water. Funny what the kids have made 'AF' to mean these days. Geeze...

???? September 4th is “V-J Day” (WWII) and November 11 is “Armistice/Veterans Day” (WWI).

Yeah that was the surrender “signing day” (9/2)...some websites have it as 9/4 (incorrect), but the more popular day in Rhode Island is “the 2nd Monday in August” (RI “Victory Day”):

Thanks for the correction.

You're welcome.

This renaming is STUPID and Trump should worry & work on other, MORE IMPORTANT things. He also should leave Veterans' Day alone!

I have always been a HUGE Trumper, but frankly this is stupid crap in the extreme!

Make July 20th Moon Landing day.

We may want to avoid that one.

My thoughts exactly

The left has diminished Veterans and the military so much already.Don't take this one day away from them. It cheapens their memory.
