Jay Leno Says He Made a 'Mistake' Letting Jimmy Kimmel 'Humiliate' Him on His Show

Kimmel publicly called out Leno for taking back 'The Tonight Show' from Conan O'Brien after handing over the reins in 2010

Jay Leno still has regrets about his infamous moment with Jimmy Kimmel.

In 2010, Kimmel made an appearance on Leno's show and called him out for his decision to renege on his promise to hand over The Tonight Show to Conan O'Brien. After ratings for the late night show and his 10 p.m. talk show, The Jay Leno Show declined, the comedian returned to the original show while O'Brien refused to switch to a later showtime.

After Leno asked Kimmel about one of the best pranks he's ever pulled during his then appearance on The Tonight Show, the comedian, 57, quipped, "I told a guy that five years from now I'm going to give you my show, and then when the five years came, I gave it to him, and then I took it back almost instantly."

On the April 23 episode of In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Leno looked back at the moment and revealed why he chose not to cut Kimmel's digs.

"When Kimmel came on my show and humiliated me on my own show, I let it happen. I didn't edit it," he said. "It was my mistake, I trusted somebody. I went, 'Ah, I made a mistake. Okay, I should pay the price.' And it's fine, it's fine. I mean, we could've edited it out of the show."

When host Graham Bensinger asked why he didn't, Leno simply replied, "Because it happened. It's real — it happened. It's my mistake. That's how you learn."

While others may say that the moment made for "good TV," Leno admitted that he hasn't been able to find the silver lining.

Jay should have asked Jimmy what it was like having a show that did everything possible to belittle women and turn them into nothing but sex objects.

Late night talk shows went to hell after Carson and Leno. Even Letterman was terrible. But all these new guys like Fallon, Kimmel and Myers are so horrible to watch. Stephen Colbert looks and acts like the little twerps we used to beat up in high school.
Of course they only got their jobs because they are leftist tools.

Yes you are so right. It did.

How I miss Carson. His shows were pure entertainment.

I haven’t watched one of these shows since.

Booking the talent-free hack Jimmy Kimmel on your show was the only real error. Once he pulled that ****, you have him removed by security and thrown out of the building onto the street, after he's had his pants pulled down. And make sure the whole sequence is taped and broadcast.

It’s too late now, but Leno’s reply should have been, “At least I never insulted an entire race by appearing in blackface, Jimmy.”

Kennel is trying to rejuvenate his ratings disaster Trump hating show by reviving a 15 year old late night wars story that started with the unlikable Leno v Leno idiots?

The 2-hour long interview with Jay is on YouTube. Yeah, he’s a lefty, but he is pretty smart with some decent morals and funny. I should have been working on a project but I had a hard time turning it off.

His wife now has dementia. It sounds like Jay takes care of her for the most part, and has a good attitude about it. “I come home, make us dinner, then we’ll watch an old TV show. I love doing it. Well - I don’t love having to do the stuff - it’s a lot of work. Bathroom stuff, you know, everything. But I love being able to help her and take care of her.”

He said he still does standup most every weekend. Leaves Friday afternoon and does a Friday and Saturday night show. Gone for 36 to 42 hours. “Well yeah, of course she has help when I’m gone.”

He had a funny story about him taking her to Nordstrom’s and she wanted to get some shoes.

I used to think Conan was a poor man’s Letterman. Now I think that Letterman’s a poor man’s Conan. But I don’t much like either one of them.

The Johnny Carson Show had a certain respect and restraint that seems lost forever. Carson seemed to respect his guests and genuinely enjoy their discussions. It wasn’t all about Johnny Carson. That’s what people enjoyed.

Those days are gone.
