The best time to view the Lyrids this year will be early morning on April 22.

The best time to observe the Lyrids is in the predawn hours when the showerโ€™s radiant is at its highest in the sky. However, be mindful that as the morning progresses, the radiant will continue to climb, but so will the approaching sunrise and the brightening skies, which will hinder visibility.

The shower is known for its luminous dust trains which can be observed for several seconds according to NASA. The Lyrids are associated with Comet Thatcher, a long-period comet that orbits the sun every 415.5 years, it last reached its closest approach to the sun in 1861.

Where to see the Lyrid meteor shower 2025: Top viewing tips

“The Lyrid meteor shower is active between April 16 and April 25. Here’s how to see it. The Lyrid meteor shower has returned, and some lucky skywatchers are already catching glimpses of these bright meteors as they streak across the sky.

The Lyrids appear to radiate from the constellation Lyra, located near the bright star Vega in the northeastern sky. But don’t focus directly on the radiant โ€” some of the most dramatic meteors often appear farther away, streaking across the surrounding sky.

For the best show, head outside during the early morning hours of April 22, as this is the peak of the meteor shower, ideally between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. local time, just before dawn.

To see the most meteors, find the darkest sky you can. Try and escape city lights and head to a rural location, a designated dark sky park, or even a quiet stretch of beach or mountain trail. But remember to stay safe and always let someone know where you are heading.

Let your eyes adjust to the dark for about 30 minutes, and try to use only red light to preserve your night vision. Then simply lean back, relax and look up!

The radiant of the Lyrid meteor shower is located near the Hercules-Lyra border.

This year’s waning crescent moon won’t rise until after 3:30 a.m. local time, so you don’t have to worry about moonlight outshining fainter meteors. Under ideal conditions โ€” very dark skies โ€” you can expect to see about 15 to 20 meteors per hour and perhaps even more if you’re lucky. The Lyrids are known for the occasional surprise outburst, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the sky.

The Lyrids are a welcome sign of spring in the northern hemisphere. So what are you waiting for? Make yourself a nice hot drink, wrap up warm and head out for a night of springtime skywatching. You never know what you might find!”

Be sure to watch “The Day of the Triffids” 1962 version before the shower.

Thanks for the post, however, I got up early to take a look-see, and discovered the moon was already “up”, low on the sky, but fairly bright. So much for finding a dark place for viewing. You’d think the article writers would mention such a thing...

GoPro Nightlapse never disappoints in times as this. anytime I have set it up, I always caught one streaking across the sky! Never timed it with an event such as this but im sure it would be spectacular...

If you think about it, the meteor showers and in reality, anything that is captured by our Earth, is damaging.

Every bit of space material that adds to the mass of the planet makes it heavier and affects the Earths rotation and orbit around the sun. Not to mention the climate, so, where are the climate-change hoax fiends when it come to trying to stop the meteors and other matter from entering our planet.

GoPro Night Photography

I don’t have the technical expertise.

Do you take photos/videos?
Can you share to FR?

Its super easy... there are 3 selections on a gopro-after turned on click the power button to switch to Camera, video or timelapse. click into timelapse and then when the picture appears on screen. at the bottom center there will be a label for timelapse identifying the selection you’re in. click that once and you’ll get 3 options. Timelapse, time warp and night lapse. click into night lapse and youre ready to go!!

Now the downside... normal timelapse creates a video. for some strange reason, night lapse does not. it creates a file of individual images. You have to take those images and build a video in a video editing program. GoPro does have a video Editor online, and when I downloaded it years ago, it was free. I dont know about it now. I use Videopad for video editing($65 a year). but in videopad, and I’m sure its the same in all editors, you have to tweak the time on each image...(00.03-.05 I think!)

Here is a Vid I made of my kids a few year back... I que’d it a few seconds before a night lapse segment where I caught a meteor!! Sooooooo cool!! good luck!!

Thank you for sharing your video!

For you, it probably is very simple... but for me it would take more than ‘good luck’!!

The creation for me to make would be more of a MIRACLE!! For me, making such an astronomy time-lapse video is placed in the very BIG bucket of things I CAN NOT or NEVER WILL BE able to do: surf, catch a Frisbee, gourmet cooking (or anything other than survival cooking or baking), & so on & so on! LOL

Again, Thank you for sharing

I’m sure there are plenty of modern-day cheaper solutions for getting night lapse captures... take baby steps and before you know it, you’ll get there!!
