Blue laser vaporization effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia
Medical Xpress / HealthDay / The Aging Male ^ | April 8, 2025 | Lori Solomon / Zun-Jie Hu et al

Blue laser vaporization alleviates lower urinary tract symptoms while preserving sexual function in patients undergoing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) surgery, according to a study.

Zun-Jie Hu and colleagues assessed the impact of 450-nm blue laser vaporization on sexual function in 67 patients (median age, 65 years) undergoing BPH surgery and followed for three months.

The researchers found that blue laser vaporization significantly improved International Prostate Symptom Score, quality of life, and International Consultation on Incontinence Modular Questionnaire for Male Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (ICIQ-MLUTS) scores. Blue laser vaporization was also significantly associated with a reduction in postvoid residual volume.

There were no significant changes seen in the International Index of Erectile Function 5 score, Male Sexual Health Questionnaire for Ejaculatory Dysfunction score, or ICIQ-MLUTS sex score, demonstrating preservation of sexual function after surgery.

"To determine the longevity of these effects, additional clinical data and extended follow-up periods are necessary," the authors write. "The findings present an effective surgical approach for safeguarding sexual function in BPH patients."

A couple years ago I used a water vapor steam under high pressure. I came out of it fully functional.

But I still have to take finasteride and flomax.

The Doctor told me I could stop taking those 2 medications, after the surgery.

I had a TURP operation about a year and a half ago. Overnight in the hospital, not even an aspirin worth of pain, out hunting quail within a week. No aftereffects except for urgent urination for a couple of months, but that eventually subsided. No ongoing medication (at least for urologic matters), but the doctor wants a visit once a year for the time being.

All in all, I’ve been quite lucky. Plenty of prostate trouble in the family, including cancer that killed my father at 77.

Wow. That’s amazing. I had a biopsy done 2 weeks ago and I feel like the doc shredded my insides. Supposed to get test results this week.

Yeah, the biopsy was no fun (of course, I was awake for that). Here’s hoping your results are completely negative.

I’m hopeful. I haven’t had many symptoms to speak of. Just had one high PSA reading. It has doubled the past two times I’ve had it measured. This was the first reading above the guidelines. Sure hoping for good news.
