Sam's Club stores is axing all self-checkouts from its 600 stores — in favor of controversial new technology.
The Walmart-owned warehouse chain, often seen as Costco's biggest rival, is rolling out AI-powered 'Scan & Go' tech that lets shoppers skip the line and walk straight out the door once they're done shopping.
The move is controversial because it uses a network of cameras and sensors to track shoppers and their carts.
In addition, the checkout-free experience requires all customers to use a smartphone and download the store’s app.
This could pose a challenge to older shoppers who may struggle with technology.
The shake-up is aimed at reducing checkout wait times as it eliminates the need for an employee to check receipts at the exit.
Customers will scan the product barcodes as they go around the store, put the item in their cart and then pay for the items in the app when they are done.
Rather than go to a register, they exit through an airport-style scanner with AI cameras that analyze carts to make sure all items in there have been scanned and paid for.

I can’t remember the last time I was in a Macy’s. FWLIW.
(Waits patiently to see how the thieves will attack THIS system).
Or their right hand or their forehead......
Shoulda just trialed it to see how folks like it.

This option has been in place for years. Now it’s not an option.
At the time I learned about this, it was based on putting RFID chips in everything. You could throw everything into a shopping bag and walk out because the scanners would pick up the RFID chips as you passed through.
Oh, BS.
Some of us prefer our freedom to choose.
I’m a boomer, and I love it!
I get their rotisserie chickens a lot and it’s the only thing I’m buying. I would not be doing that if I had to wait in line.
Yes, easy to un-scan an item. Carries a running total, and pic of the items. Before checkout, you verify the number of items in the cart.
I’m not sure why people are upset at being tracked on an app when everything you buy Sam’s or Costco is tracked for their use. And yours.
I’m amazed by this as most of these self-checkout systems know the WEIGHT of items as well as the price. So, you scan a can of corn, it expects the weight in the bagging area to increase by the weight of a can of corn. And they’re VERY sensitive! So I’m amazed she was able to scan a watch battery, and put something else in the bagging area that weighed more.
Not a waste! It’s great!
In the city. Maybe it’s an urban thing.
Honestly I think I was in one 5 or 6 years ago, too.
The jacket is great, though. Glad I wasn’t tackled and beaten senseless by security, though.
Same here and I won't be adding ANY pay app to my phone.
“You will go if eggs are $1 a dozen.”
Me either, some principles cannot be bought t any price. I will get my own chickens again or stop eating eggs first. I refuse to entertain this madness myself. Let the idiots embrace their own enslavement with tech. Let them sell their soul to the beast, not me.
“So many Luddite curmudgeons on FR!”
You got it, tech is not going to enslave me... You can worship the Beast, not me...
Been using this for a while now. Yes, you can delete an item after it was scanned. Yes, it displays each item’s price. I don’t think it displays a running total. No bags are available in the store I use, but you can pick up boxes to place items in. Most just push their cart to their car and load directly. There is a checker at the door that waves you through if your scans and items reconcile and your payment was finalized. If there is a discrepancy you get stopped.
So many Luddite curmudgeons on FR!

“I’ve been using this scan and go technology. I like it, but I guess those who are not up to speed on 21st century technology probably don’t.”
We are plenty up to speed. We just choose not to be enslaved by technology. It is the Beast...
‘ You can worship the Beast, not me...’
