Sam's Club stores is axing all self-checkouts from its 600 stores — in favor of controversial new technology.
The Walmart-owned warehouse chain, often seen as Costco's biggest rival, is rolling out AI-powered 'Scan & Go' tech that lets shoppers skip the line and walk straight out the door once they're done shopping.
The move is controversial because it uses a network of cameras and sensors to track shoppers and their carts.
In addition, the checkout-free experience requires all customers to use a smartphone and download the store’s app.
This could pose a challenge to older shoppers who may struggle with technology.
The shake-up is aimed at reducing checkout wait times as it eliminates the need for an employee to check receipts at the exit.
Customers will scan the product barcodes as they go around the store, put the item in their cart and then pay for the items in the app when they are done.
Rather than go to a register, they exit through an airport-style scanner with AI cameras that analyze carts to make sure all items in there have been scanned and paid for.

A Tennessee woman has been banned from every Walmart in the country after an epic shoplifting spree.
Ashley Cross, 37, cannot enter any of the grocery giant’s 4,600 stores after being caught running a bar code scam.

You will go if eggs are $1 a dozen
We’ve been using this for about five years now. Nothing new.
When they deploy in San Francisco will the first 950$ be free.
I guess the cost of RFID chips have fallen low enough to do this.
I’ve been a member of Sam’s Club since it was Pace Membership Warehouse. Walmart bought them in 1993.
Looks like this will be my last year.
Can an item be un-scanned once scanned? What if you scan it and it’s more than you want to pay or the wrong price? Does it display the price and a running total?
Do you get to bag/box the items?
Mainly because I refuse to download an app just to shop there.
There are good people who - through no fault of their own - can find no better job than that of a checkout clerk.
I will stand in line for one of those folks for an hour before going to a self-serve line. And if all the lines are self-serve, I will shop elsewhere.
As with most things, your mileage may vary.
This is the mode of operation at some https://zabka.pl convenience stores but that is in a higher trust society.
No thank you. Big Brother monitoring your shopping. Might as well buy on line which is one thing the retailers would like.
Nope
Also the automated ones tend to be inside other businesses representing some group affinity such as office buildings or membership fitness centers.
Same here. No store or resturant apps. I saw the other day that the US Post Office is using apps. This is what China does
That would be a 'nope' from me. Most apps are just spyware with the functionality just a bait to get folks hooked. If you look at the permissions, there are always tracking functions enabled that they don't really need to deliver what is needed.
Great. More apps. And scanning. And cameras.
Shoulda just trialed it to see how folks like it.
Here in Kali if you buy booze you have to go to a real live checker. Problem solved ;-)
Someone will say it’s racist.
