Costco rival removing all self-checkout machines... and replacing them with something even worse
DAILYMAIL.COM ^ | 17 April 2025 | ALICE WRIGHT

Sam's Club stores is axing all self-checkouts from its 600 stores — in favor of controversial new technology.

The Walmart-owned warehouse chain, often seen as Costco's biggest rival, is rolling out AI-powered 'Scan & Go' tech that lets shoppers skip the line and walk straight out the door once they're done shopping.

The move is controversial because it uses a network of cameras and sensors to track shoppers and their carts.

In addition, the checkout-free experience requires all customers to use a smartphone and download the store’s app.

This could pose a challenge to older shoppers who may struggle with technology.

The shake-up is aimed at reducing checkout wait times as it eliminates the need for an employee to check receipts at the exit.

Customers will scan the product barcodes as they go around the store, put the item in their cart and then pay for the items in the app when they are done.

Rather than go to a register, they exit through an airport-style scanner with AI cameras that analyze carts to make sure all items in there have been scanned and paid for.

My local Sam’s no longer checks your printed receipt for a greeter to compare to items in your cart upon exit. It’s all scanned as you exit. Perhaps this was the prototype for this new checkout scheme.

You can still stand in line to check out

“Really weird.”

Not weird at all, as a techy you should understand this coming reality as a fact... We are allowing them to enslave us with tech...

Just read this as just only one example of how they already now “own” us with Tech...

The surveillance State won’t be the brought about as oppression, it will be sold as convenience and safety with a smile 🤔

Remember when the Leafs cut off the truckers access to money ?

Uh Costco didn’t like your political view, you’re cut off, as is your bank, so on and so forth.

Download your app today ! 🤔

It’s a productivity tool. Like a hammer, screwdriver, or drill for example. Specifically in this case, the Scan and Go App is one of the better application tools I have ever used. In many ways, more private than a cashier mediated transaction. Much, much faster as well. I just don’t understand this automatic rejection of a valuable tool just because it’s on a phone or computer.

Well, I need to tell my ap story.

I recently learned that I can purchase diesel fuel from the nearby Exxon station using my Walmart ap. The price is $.10 off the Exxon pump price

When I arrive at the station, the Walmart ap knows where I am and asks for the Exxon Pump number. Most of the time it is #12. When I enter the #12, the ap communicates with the pump and the new price per gallon changes. I am now purchasing fuel from Walmart via my Walmart account, from a pump at an Exxon station, at a price that is $.10 less than the Exxon price at the same pump.

and..... it is a cashless transaction, purely cloud based electronics, never touched by human hands

Absolutely right on the money... Convenience now will be control in the near future. And once all other options are gone like cash, or personal physical one on one business there will not be one thing we can do about it. It will be too late. No one is going to like what is coming at all... I am completely perplexed why this coming reality is just so hard to see...

It is interesting to watch stores end bagging groceries for the customers.

Aldi already does that. Checkout is fast...into the cart and then you bag it.

Been in use for years at some Whole Foods, Wegmans, etc.

Use at Weggies when I am back visiting. Don’t use at Whole Foods but use their app.

BJ’s has a smartphone app - use it all the time for the 2-3 things I buy there. Bypass the checkout lines completely.

“It’s a productivity tool. Like a hammer, screwdriver, or drill for example.”

For now... But in the backroom of these tech corporations and governments they are forging these into one sized fit’s all mandatory balls & chains and control leashes. You actually do not have the vision to see where this is all going? Do you actually think there is a line drawn where it will stop and not enslave us? Better yet, do you actually think they can be trusted to not have this end goal as an agenda? You bet they do, complete dependency on their tech products is indeed the end goal whether we want it or not. And there will not be an “opt out” clause...

You have never been in a situation where an automated phone system or web service denied completion of an action because one step was not applicable to your transaction and yet it would not allow you to advance to the next step? Batter yet, place you in a position where the automation and software is the final unquestioned authority on the matter and there is no option to opt out or appeal the process let alone a number to contact and talk to a human to actually complete the transaction?

You can’t tell me me this has never happened to you. Well get used to it, because this will become the norm in mass and it will be mandatory if we are stupid enough to allow them to do it. And once this is in place the government will take possession and use it for micromanaging control over every little aspect of our lives. You actually don’t already see this happening now? Or are you in denial of the reality? Here is the reality... What is “convenient” now will be “control” tomorrow.

Fast compared to what? How does putting the customers to work speed up checkout, make it smoother, or easier, or better?

Honey why did you buy 400 cans of cat food when we don’t own one?.

Bingo. I do not work for any shop. I am retired. If you want me to do your job offer me a substantial discount at the register. Not “we use the savings to keep prices down” crappola. No, show me what I SAVE on my receipt.

Otherwise, F@#$ off.

If Costco rolls this out I am done with them. On everything.

“Fast compared to what? How does putting the customers to work speed up checkout, make it smoother, or easier, or better?”

Now I am going to go out of my way to support your concept here as absolutely correct. It might be for just a few items. But it takes twice as long for a full and packed cart. And self check out with a full cart is EXTREMELY INCONVENIENT and not convenient at all. And it is counterproductive and self defeating for the retailer.

As a retailer you do not want customers coming in and only leaving with a few items, you want them to come in and fill a cart as full as they can get. To have them do this you have to make it easy for them to do it or they WILL NOT...

the old 5 and 10 store philosophy was “if I could get a nickel from each customer” was the way to success.

I think a lot of this war against plastic bags and sackers are people who don’t fill up the cart (s) to overflowing and who don’t often require two carts to get it all to the car, like families and people who go to the store once or twice a month.

Self service gas, bring your own bags and sack your groceries yourself, and add grocery bags to your weekly clothes washing. I wonder if restaurants have started suggesting that you bus your own table and set the dishes by the kitchen door before you walk out.
