The Great Easter Basket Question — to Peep or not Peep
KSBW ^ | Apr 14, 2025 | TASSANEE VEJPONGSA and JOHN SEEWER

Love them or hate them, those marshmallow Peeps that come in blindingly bright colors and an array of flavors are inescapable around the Easter holiday. Millions are made daily in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, by Just Born Quality Confections, a family-owned candy manufacturer that also churns out Hot Tamales, Mike and Ike fruit chews and Goldenberg's Peanut Chews.

Peeps is Just Born's most recognizable brand and one of a handful of candies that evoke strong reactions — good and bad. Some say an Easter basket isn't complete without Peeps while others deride them as being indestructible. Some use them in recipes or even artwork. "Even if you're not usually one to gravitate to eating the Peeps, there's always so many other fun ways to include them in your celebrations," said Caitlin Servian, brand manager for Peeps.

On average, about 5.5 million are made each day. That adds up to 2 billion a year — or roughly 6 Peeps for every man, woman and child across the U.S. First hatched in yellow, the sugary chicks and bunnies come in nine colors for this Easter season, including pink, blue and lavender. And there are even more flavors — 14 for Easter — from cookies and cream, to fruit punch and sour watermelon. The varieties and colors vary throughout the year with different holiday seasons.

Yes, they’re better with a little chewiness. If you have a fireplace or a gas stove, you can toast them on a skewer, too. They are marshmallows, after all.

I used to like toasting regular marshmallows on the gas range - I liked them a little burnt. I think Peeps would be too sweet for me...

When we were kids in the 50’s, Peeps didn’t come in an array of colors. I didn’t care for them, so never found them in my basket, but my brother loved them, so they ended up in his basket.

"...but if there are any Nestle’s Crunch bars in there, they are confiscated for the child’s safety!! ;P"

I grew up in the 50's. I loved Nestle's Milk Chocolate and Crunch bars as a kid. Loved Milkshake candy bars too. They stopped making Milkshake bars and don't make Nestle's Milk Chocolate Bars anymore either. I wrote Nestle's about the inability to find any Milk Chocolate Bars, and they told me they are only available in the bag of assorted mini-candy bars they make. I told them I don't like any of the other mixed crap they have in the bag size, and won't buy a whole bag to get three lousy mini-milk chocolate bars. Things you enjoy are always being discontinued. I love Heinz Original Whole Sour Dill Pickles but they don't make them anymore, and I haven't found a substitute for them ever since.

"I’m not a fan of donuts either. I never understood the craze for ‘Krispy Kreme’."

We don't have any of them around here. I tried their glazed donut once when I was visiting friends in Charleston, S.C., and found it way too sicky-sweet. I prefer Dunkin' Donuts, but on the ones they make in this area. It's a baked donut that they put chocolate frosting on, then a dollop of white cream. They call them "Headlights" here. They also sell the same donut with red jelly on top, which they call "Tail-lights." I don't buy those.

Wegman's Grocery Store in Syracuse, NY has great muffins. Their French Vanilla Muffins are excellent. They also make custard filled donuts with chocolate frosting on top. I get those for my son. I like their cream-filled donuts with chocolate frosting on top. It's a good thing I live an hour away, and only go there once in a blue moon.

"I can honestly say, I’ve never seen a speck of mold..."

No self-respecting mold would go near them.

"Peeps with ketchup is revolting."

About as disgusting as ketchup with eggs. My father ate his eggs that way. Yuck!!

"My husband eats his eggs with hot sauce."

LOL!! Does he carry a bottle of it around with him like Hillary?

The first time I ever saw anyone put hot sauce on their eggs, was during my career in corrections. The inmates would bring their bottles of hot sauce to the messhall every meal. They couldn't have glass bottles. They had to be plastic, which is something they could get through the facility's inmate commissary.

About the only chocolate bars I eat now, when I do buy any, I like Giardelli’s Milk Chocolate Salted Caramel Wafer Squares. I also discovered Asher’s Milk Chocolate covered graham crackers. I buy a box of 18 that are individually wrapped, and take my time eating them. I’m diabetic, and have to watch my chocolate intake. I can usually cheat if I watch the other stuff I eat, and my Endocrinologist is happy with my AC1 number.

Cadbury caramel filled eggs are awesome. I usually wait a few days after Easter to buy them at a discount.

ooooo I agree their awesomeness! But round here, I have learned to buy some early (like 2-3 weeks b4 Easter) coz after that, I can't find em anymore!
