Vindictive MLG vetoes ‘State Bread,’ license plate bills to punish Dems (new Mexico)
The Piñon Post ^ | April 11, 2025 | Piñon Post staff

In a dramatic and unmistakably vindictive move, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham unleashed a political tantrum on Friday, vetoing a slate of bills—most notably Senate Bill 315, which would have designated the tortilla as New Mexico’s official state bread. The veto wasn’t about bread, though—it was about revenge.

The governor’s veto message dripped with frustration as she lashed out at the Legislature, blaming Democratic leadership in both chambers for failing to move forward with her policy priorities. Instead of working collaboratively or responsibly, the governor torched legislation ranging from cultural designations to tax relief and public safety funding—effectively using her veto pen to punish lawmakers who didn’t do her bidding.

“I am vetoing this legislation to send a clear message,” the governor fumed ...

The tortilla bill, inspired by Las Cruces student Adaline McIntosh, was a heartfelt proposal intended to celebrate the state’s rich culinary heritage. But the governor instead reduced it to political collateral damage. ...

The veto came with a slew of additional casualties. Among the dozens of bills killed:

All were axed not because of policy objections, but because of perceived legislative disloyalty. The vetoes weren’t about principle—they were about punishment.

It's not just Republicans who are the subject of MLG's axe, but those Democrats who don't bow to her wishes.

Just what we’re her policy priorities? I noticed the article never even went there. Suspicious.

Most of those bills sound like just more slop for pigs at the political trough.

Her priority is her. If Kamala had won she would have been out of here in a hot minute.

Her big priority was revising the revolving door (catch and release) for adult criminals though she was not supportive of proposals from the Pubs to attack juvenile crime.

HB-14 passed the state senate with a 36-1 vote after oil and gas tax provisions were stripped out. Among other provisions, the tax package would have given a personal income tax break to an estimated 101,000 working New Mexicans and would have provided a tax credit or deduction for foster parents and health care practitioners. It also called for a 20% hike in New Mexico’s liquor excise tax rate.

Governor beats deadline by signing $10.8 billion budget bill, but vetoes tax package

I’m wondering when New Mexicans will wake up. Their state is not very wealthy and they have significant amounts of oil and gas that could be fracked thus providing good paying jobs and lots of tax revenue. And they’ve voted for Leftist Gaia worshipers who sabotage their own state by clamping down on that hard. WTF????

This is economically crippling to New Mexico which needs the money.

NM currently pumps about 2 million barrels a day. It accounts for 15% of all US production. So naturally the politicians want to punish it.

Is this a situation of someone overreacting to a lighthearted idea because she thinks this reduces her authority in some way? It’s what bureaucrats often do.
