Just as it was with Soviet leaders, part of Putin’s influence lies in the mystery surrounding him, all the unanswered questions about his state of health, about how much he is supported by his comrades. In other words, every few weeks, he becomes “inaccessible”. Every other month, he appears in an apparent state of ill health, but his actual state of health is never confirmed one way or the other.
This may be Putin’s way of finding out who in his power circle is most likely to betray him. Kim Jung Un of North Korea used to do the same thing, sometimes “disappearing” months at a time.
