Republicans who are evidently not too comfortable with President Donald Trump’s decision to announce large new global tariffs have tried plenty of hints to push him in a different direction. And one of Trump’s most vocal tariff critics on the GOP side, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, tried a relatively novel one on Wednesday.
He pointed to electoral peril for the GOP.
“Tariffs have also led to political decimation,” Paul told reporters. “When [William] McKinley most famously put tariffs on in 1890, they lost 50 percent of their seats in the next election. When [Sens. Reed Smoot and Willis C. Hawley] put on their tariff in the early 1930s, we lost the House and the Senate for 60 years.
“So they’re not only bad economically; they’re bad politically.”
This is a good point.
Whatever the theoretical economic benefits of major tariffs, history shows they have coincided with huge losses for the Republicans — and it has almost always been Republicans — who pursue them.

Oh I hear you my dad was in the steelworkers union and he would tell me all the time about how many contracts his company lost because they couldn’t compete with the dumping of Chinese and Canadian steel. It would cause mass layoffs from time to time.
Wholeheartedly agree. I’m tired of the USA being the sugar daddy for the rest of the world. What part of reciprocal does Rand Paul not understand? What we really need now is to drill baby drill. We are going to need fuel for the future AI.
We gotta get our folks making things. Steelworkers, UAW, IUOE, etc. , we need us the US making our own stuff. We got our kids protecting a homeland while their parents can’t get a job because outsiders under cut our steel, grain, meat, cars, clothes and energy. This is BS. It has to stop. If the fat cats can’t stand the heat? Maybe it’s time to kick their ass out of their comfy little beds. The unions ain’t the answer either. They’ve got their fat cats. If you want to work, welcome aboard pard, grab a shovel, we’re digging out of this 💩. Regards

Not in 1893...[not caused by tariffs, per se... but tipping points were definitely reached.]
>> So Freepers, Rand reckons the GOP won’t hold power for 60 years after this mess.....
I could care less what that fickle liptard “reckons”.
Disloyal, ‘Rat-stroking POS.
FYRP
I know you can care less Pard. Couldn’t is more accurate. Be safe. Regards😊
America 2025 is not America from 1920’s and 30’s.
Back then the British empire was still a powerful European market. Things are vastly different. Post war Europe is not a thing either.
Analogies are bad here.
The letter after the name means jack anymore.
The only reason political parties still exist is to give voters the illusion of choice.
A pol is either loyal to our republic or to Deep State.
Too many of the GOP is Deep State.
They can go the way of the dodo with my blessing.
Rand Paul has quickly gone from being a nuisance to becoming a McCain level GOPe destructive force. He can disagree on tariffs, but he now appears to be going out of his way to assist Deep State Democrats and cause destructive mischief for MAGA. He needs to stop. Immediately.
Keep outsourcing our vital industries or else, SUCKA!
so true 👍
So rand supports the creation of the income tax to fund the federal government over the use of tariffs?
>> Couldn’t is more accurate.
You are right sir.

It took me a while to understand the logic, or so I think I understand it. The idea of the tariffs is to do unto them as they do unto us. Meaning they are reciprocal. It appears we are already getting major manufacturers into the country.
Our system of foreign trade has been unfair for several decades. I never understood shipping all of our manufacturing to China, which in turn created unemployment in big cities, which in turn created a situation where the kids become gangsters that sell drugs to the elites. The same elites that got rid of manufacturing and are now gutting the US Treasury.
I can’t stand seeing “Made In China”.
The markets will straighten out, they always do.
All will not only be well, but better.
You knew and I knew it just reads funky if read at a certain cadence. It’s great to know, you really know. 😁 regards
Listen you globalist maggot, why don’t you pack your sh!t and git.
Yup.
Anyone who takes the screen name of a politician is suspect in my book.
